You would need an amp to run the sub so running wires would still be needed. An active sub is the easiest and neatest way if you don't want massive bass

I have had an active subwoofer in both defenders and they really are the best method of minimal intrusion regarding storage with maximum output. The issue with a passive subwoofer is that you have to have an Amp which you then have to store somewhere, also means another set of wires and more things that the dogs can chew or the kids can pull.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Alpine-SWE-1000-Po...B001J2YYQY I know the Alpine is a firm favourite on the forum for active subwoofers, this is also what i have installed with the Focal speakers. I have the PC100's in the rear as opposed to the front. http://www.caraudio4less.co.uk/focal-bus25...-3057.html If you would like to stick with focal, then at double the cost is the above from Focal that I found when I was in the store buying other bits. Firm vote for active subwoofer from me. =================================== Steve 90 xs sw in Stonoway Grey - Sold 110 USW X-TECH |

As recommended by Steve, I now have this one in both our cars - great natural sound for little unit:

anyone got the alpine SWE 1200? (Listed as a new model on their site)
I suspect Santa may be bringing one of those for me The amp appears to be separate so the speaker unit is a bit smaller, so hopefully will go under the rear seat - we'll see. Good Christmas everyone. Kraut - Sorry for the later reply..
In both installations you will need to run signal cables (the RCA's with your aftermarket HU) and power cables I'm afraid. An active sub would be the easiest option but due to size will give a good output but not massive where as a passive sub and amp combo such as mine will but it's a lot of work to find space modify the cubby and the works. In fact I built my cubby box from scratch.. If you want to go the passive sub and amp route I can give you some recommendations (probably to get shot down in flames with ) Or if you'd like to go the active sub route I would suggest one of two options below: Kenwood KSC-SW01: http://www.justkenwood.co.uk/car-audio.aspx/ksc-sw01-speaker (Good quality reasonable price and output) Kicker Hideaway http://www.kicker.com/Hideaway (A bit more expensive and again good quality but has a higher output to it infact a fair bit more) As I currently feel lately I'd be inclined to go for the Kicker. Lovely looking thing easy to set up good power output and just looks right. Both units above would suit fitting behind the cubby I would have thought or anywhere else for that matter. For your power cable routing you could do this: Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Neat, unobtrusive sealed and protected. Have a nice Christmas. Thanks for your help, as suggested I'll buy an active sub to be placed behind the cubbybox or under the second row seats. Had hoped it was a short plug n play thing for over the xmas holidays but had to find out no near hifishop has any similar item in stock right now, so I'll have to buy one next week and get it wired by a specialist. And there is still the project of reinstalling the rearcam near the roofside to get a better view when reversing.

Kraut - So you don't fancy tackling it and fitting it yourself then? t's not difficult just a little time consuming. No Guts, No Glory.

Just wondering if my habbits are big enough, was very impressed by myself when I installed the system, but in fact I am very very limited when it comes to electric wiring to the battery. Installing the sub itself and the cable to headunit shouldn't be a problem though, the defender really is a kind of Lego building set for ignoramus people like me, learning by doing with a lot of fun!

I must admit that I do have an arsenal of tools to hand but that wasn't the hardest bit for me or indeed making my set up. The biggest brain teaser at first was finding the space for everything to work correctly and safely and look neat as well. I have seen some very DIY looking jobs before not just on Defenders but all cars in general.

It isn't his just so you know.. Think he said he could get a picture one day. This would be the ideal place to post a "How not to do it"
Scariest part is that if it's like that it'll probably be shockingly wired. Death trap. No Guts, No Glory. 🇬🇧🏴🏴🏴🇮🇪🇺🇸⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰💪 |
