Thanks custom90steve. Fitted my new Xmas present - a Kenwood DAB radio - fantastic sound even with the original speakers on my 90 XS. DAB aerial fitted on the heated front screen and gives a Strong to Very Strong signal even though the aerial overlies the heating elements. Also has a front USB input so have used a 16GB mini USB stick so have days of music to listen to.

WelshGas -Excellent glad you are pleased! I've posted on your FS ad with some useful info for you. Thought I'd get in there quick.. Also glad you chose a small short USB stick for the front that massively cuts down the likelyhood of it getting hit and bending the stick / socket or worse. If / when you upgrade your speakers you will enter into another world of quality and power yet again but in the mean time if your running OE speakers I'd just keep a cap on the volume as the Kenwood is probably putting out more power than the LR unit so pushing them harder. If you did sell the OE speakers they should be worth around £20 a pair or £40 for all 4.

Thanks custom90steve. I could be wrong but my research indicates that both units have the same power output, 50watts x 4. But as I have never run the Land Rover unit above level 18 volume I doubt I will have any problems. I changed the unit for the DAB functionality and the ability to use a USB stick. High volume and Hi-Fi quality are not my forte, not that it could be in a Defender, well at least the Hi-Fi bit. LANDYWATCH

the 4x 50w Is RMS a continuous rating. Peak power is a different matter it's the power that a speaker can handle for a short period of time. As a rule I've always found peak rating outputs are rarely put down on paper (for what reasons I do not know on HU's) But obviously the higher the volume the peak power output goes up. Most aftermarket 10cm speakers have a peak of roughly 80w to 140w (mine are 140w) however the LR speakers I would imagine are around 80w peak so can't take as much punishment.
That said I too like yourself don't like loud music as such. I like it powerful and with some deep bass. So you really get the depth and quality. On any system the volume should never be maxed out but no doubt in a fools hands it probably does happen. Then the speakers blow and a lot of money goes down the drain. I'll stop rabbiting on now. Started ending the project yesterday. Repositioned the rearcam to the roof to get a better view to both sides:
And as a total DIY-douchebag I destroyed my roof reversing into the garage slantways at the mounting of the garage gate!!! Also changed the Focals PC 100 from front to rear, because tonights project will be fitting Focals I1000VRS Speakers to the front and a Rainbow intelli 8 sub (the sub recommended by Steve wasn't on stock, therefore had to go for something similar) under the second row seats, after the professionals installed powerlines for the sub today And to make the look a little more LR-like I changed the moniceiver-screen from picture to plain green. Also changed the format of the video-input from 4:3 to 16:9 widescreen, much better view than before. Very nice and neat. Good job. I wouldn't worry about the scratch too much it's relatively minor with a touch up done. No Guts, No Glory.

6x9's Who has some? Where are they mounted? And what power figures are they pushing out? I'm not worried what brand you've got just interested to see / know what other's have gone for.

Very neat. With your speakers were you able to use the original mounting holes or did you have to drill new ones like I did? No Guts, No Glory.

In the front it was just plug&play. In the back I had to use longer screws, because the 'housing' of the speakers were wider than the notch from the trim panels for the OEM-speakers, therefore the gap to the mounting holes was bigger
And used the original grilles for the tweeters in the dashboard, probably nobody would want to steal original LR-soundsystems: Click image to enlarge Admin note: this post has had its images recovered from a money grabbing photo hosting site and reinstated |
