Hi Steve,

There are two 6x9's fitted onto a 5mm ply panel behind the rear seats in the 130 I've just bought.

The panel vibrates quite a lot, how can I reduce that ? Should I use a thicker panel (perhaps in chipboard) and should there be 'air ports' as I've seen on home speaker enclosures ?

Also should I line the inside on the enclosure ?

Regards

Matt

Matt - It's extremely difficult to say or help unless you could get some pictures up that would REALLY help. I wouldn't use any other material other than ply or MDF. My personal choice is always MDF but you have to remember it is not good with the elements especially wet it can make it swell and basically fall apart but in dry areas is great and very easy to work with. My cubby the my sub is fitted into is 100% 12mm think MDF protected by a faux leather wrap. Maybe IF it's suitable it maybe the route to go yourself too as I say if suitable for the area you want it. Lining the enclosure doesn't need to be lined but if I was you I would seal it to make it a sealed enclosure. The air ports you mention are basically vented enclosures which allow you to alter the frequency depending on box volume and size of port. Personally I would stick to sealed and also they are mostly for subs not 6x9s. You are lucky in a way to have room for 6x9s because due to their size they often have a high power output. If you need any 12mm MDF or black faux leather let me know I might be able to help you out with a small amount. Wink Pics would be good though mate if you could manage it.

Regards
Steve

Thanks Steve, here are the pics.

Thank you for the offer of the MDF and leatherette, very kind.

It'll be easier to buy some MDF down here and I don't think we are short of real leather Rolling Eyes Mr. Green Thumbs Up

Hi Matt,
Your welcome about the MDF offer ect but your probably right. Now advice. I would use some 12mm MDF (available at Wickes in boards of approx 2ft x 4ft about £12 I think. Leather your already sorted on. Anyway, I'd take out the speakers and the ply panel and use it as a template to cut out your MDF sheet as an identical copy. Once you've got that all sorted out I would wrap it in leatherette material to protect it and look nice from the outside. From the inside... I remember you mentioning vibration... And I see there is a few loose wires there too. Firstly I would bundle any loose wires together and tape them together as that will vibrate against things probably the ply before as you mentioned. I would also carpet the back of the board / inside this will simply stop anything vibrating against the MDF. (This is what I did with my Amp mount) It may also be a good idea to use some adhesive foam strip abut £2 on E-bay to go between the enclosure / board and the LR's body to prevent vibration there. And then of course you can fix it back in then and the speakers. Also I am not sure on the power of the current 6x9's but it's likely you could get much more powerful one's if you wanted but that would be up to you. I know of some Kenwood one's that are 250w RMS each and 500 peak Twisted Evil

Thumbs Up
Cheers

matt - a cheap solution to make your ply backing sheet stiffer (and reduce rattle) would be to screw on a couple of horizontal timber battens (32 x 16mm approx) to act as a couple of "ribs"
admittedly steve gives a much neater solution Thumbs Up

Cheers FG, I'm going to be using the 130 as a bit of a 'show car' for the FCX products (and showcase some of the other sponsors products) so 'Show' will be as important as 'Go' Mr. Green

Just ordered my new head unit after much deliberation. Decided in the end that the Kenwood BT92SD fits the bill perfectly and offers lots of future flexibility, as well as having bluetooth built in. Looking forward to it arriving and getting it installed! Speakers next, when funds allow! Thumbs Up 2005 Td5 | 90 Station Wagon | Tonga Green

Green Machine - That certainly looks very nice especially with the green illumination on. Mr. Green If you want 10cm standard size Defender speakers I'd choose these below. Same as mine power wise only new design.

Sort of.

I've taken the existing set up out and started making templates to put a piece of 19mm MDF in instead.

I've realised I can come forward some more giving me 120mm depth for some more powerful speakers

First question, get some more powerful 6 x 9's (with a dedicated amp) or go for a set of component speakers, say 6.5" with a separate tweeter that I can mount up in the headlining ?

Secondly, lots of talk about Focal, which set up are people using in the front, is it the 100 VRS at about £185 ?
