Scotland 2007 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 XS CSW Santorini Black
About to buy my first 110 :)
I am currently in the process of buying a 110, but have a few ?'s that i thought you guys could help me with.

I will use this as my daily driver and have a budget of around £20K so im just wondering if i would be better buying an older model with higher miles between £10-15K and keep £5k back for any sort of repacement parts down the road or if i just go for the newest version i can get with low miles close to the £20K mark ???

Any info is greatly appreciated as this will be my first Defender Mr. Green !

Thanks,

Michael

ummm a dificult one. Have you ever owned /ran a defender?

If so what model?

If not, why do you want one?

Personally i'd buy a comuting banger. sub 5 k then buy an early puma 90 with a few miles on for best.

No i have never owned a defender. I moved to the states when i was 7 and always wanted a Defender, but at the time they were so rare and extremely expensive so when i got my license i bought a Jeep Wrangler TJ and put 7" of lift and 35" Super Swampers as a compromise Laughing !

Now 28 i live back in Scotland with my wife and 3 kids and moved out to the country so i need a good all year round 4x4 so this is why i was looking at the 110. Need the space for the kids and dogs and to be honest i was hoping to find a good LR club to go trail riding in it with my sons...

Have a look at this thread on noise levels:

http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic8817.html

Depending on what you want to do with the 110, i.e. is it a workhorse, car replacement etc, I'd consider buying the newest you can afford, it's generally perceived that the the Puma is more refined than the TD5 which will be a consideration if you're using it every day. Whichever you go for I'd consider keeping £50-£600 aside for a ecu remap from the likes of Alive, Bell or Autologic. I have the latter and it's made the car much more drivable, well worth the money.

Thanks for the Thread link cobs Smile ! Ok, so you'll have to bear with me with my LR knowledge, but what exactly is the differnce between a puma and a TD5 ? i have seen alot of classified ads for defenders stating that they are puma's but i dont know what that means in terms of the differnt options it has...

A puma is a 2.4 tdci ford engined defender with a bulge in the bonnet and the td5 is a 2.5 5 cylinder Landrover engine produced when BMW owned them both good engine but both have there problems ?
The td5 is more tuneable but the puma is a great allround engine with te capability And a 6 speed gearbox 2015 2.2 tdci hardtop xs
3.2 conversion DONE 238bhp and 707nm torque and thats just the start ;-P
hybrid turbo in build -done ready to fit
ashcroft atb in transfer box
6 speed auto in build

Defenders are an aquired taste! thats why i asked. If you are tall...6' plus etc the driving position can be un confortable. The puma dash is better for heating and vent. XS trim levels get you heated seats and windscreen, not essential but great on the long dark days of winter.

a few i would choose

For what it's worth I swapped a year old BMW 530D M Sport with all the toys for my 110 Puma and haven't regretted it for a single second. Its absolutely brilliant so it can be done... Was my first Defender too!

Well i am trading in an A4 for this and i said to the wife last week that for my 28th i wanted a jeep. I had a wrangler before and thought about getting another, but when i started looking at the 110's my heart was then set on one. Plus, i was hoping it would score me points with the kids too Laughing !

I have had two 110 DC's as my daily driver / work vehicle / family car. Both are brilliant with the enviable compromises that come with Land Rover ownership.

If you can live with this you will love it. My TD5 started first time after a day in Core Cas car park at -24 a few years ago!

I would buy a pre-reg with sub 10k miles on it, it will have at least 2-2.5 years warranty on it so you can just drive and enjoy!

Similarish budget to us. You can get a decent 110xs for that but take an expert to check it over very thoroughly. We've had loads of issues sorted with ours but it was a battle. Mileage is almost irrelevant, its how it was used that's important.

Ours is now pretty sorted (we hope!) but it was a headache getting it there.

Ask here for good dealers. Some are dreadful. Oh and unless you know your stuff, I'd buy with a warranty of some sort. Defender 110XS SW gone... now VW California 180 4 Motion.
