Rear crossmember/bumper needs a good tidy up too. If you buy one that did have a roof rack, check very carefully for roof damage/extra corrosion. That rack looks like an old climbing frame that's fallen on the roof! ![]() |

One other thing i am having a dilema about is the tyres ! I want something that looks aggressive and works in the winter, but works well on the road as well as off road. Was thinking either:
BFG Mud Terrains Cooper Discoverer STT Cooper zeon ltz Any of you guys running these ? what are the best for snow ? |

Can of worms, well and truly opened.
You will not get one common answer. BFG tyres have established a good reputation, however new tyres and compounds will they have the same longevity etc? We have two 110's and run them on BFG M/T 255/85/16. Summer and winter, on road and offroad. Yes we are happy with them. We get about 60,000 miles out of them before we scrap them with 3-5 mm of tread left. Yes we could get more miles out of them, but for off road use they are getting like slicks. On the Disco we have BFG A/T 235/65/16 and they have about 50,000 miles on them and are no where near worn out yet. Mainly road use. Just remember people have different use of their vehicles, different driving styles etc. We have a steepish, winding lane with dry stone walls either side. Come winter time I decide on snow/ice conditions wether to drive it or go the long way around (about 5 miles). If I go longway around, next time I drive it there may well be a vehicle abadonde or a bumper etc by roadside. Driving a Land Rover in winter does not make you invincible! Brendan |

I had a set of 35" bfg mt's and they lasted a good long while like yours have, but then i was in texas at the time and we didn't get snow out there. I guess my main concern is the traction that i'll get on the road in the snow while driving to work etc. I know its everyone to themself, but i guess im just tryin to figure out whether a AT would be better than a MT in snow conditions... |

Have at look at this site:

BFG M/T or A/T are M + S rated
i.e. they are rated as Mud and Snow tyres. They are not a true Winter tyre. A winter tyre has a softer compound and do not start to 'harden up' at temperatures below 7C Winter tyres have more sipes in them so they can flex more. Downside of winter tyres are they will wear out faster in the summer months. This is why Scandinavian drivers often have two sets of tyres. So do you go for true winter tyres, swop tyres over twice a year and have a storage problem OR keep to a good brand of M + S tyres? Supplement the M + S tyres with good snow chains at about £300 for a pair is maybe an option to consider??? Decisions, decisions. What will be the right one for you this winter?? Brendan |

Unless some goon has put road tyres on a Defender, pretty much all will cope pretty well in snow and ice.
Got out of several sticky situations in ours that anything else would have failed in last year - two occasions required extreme care and selection of difflock/high range (low slips too much on ice IMO) but got there in the end. I was amazed how good it was TBH - and the ONLY vehicles on the road (this is rural Cornwall) when it got really bad were Defenders. You would have all been proud! Defender 110XS SW gone... now VW California 180 4 Motion. |
