A new wiper relay is £10 or a gallon of diesel.

Following on from this thread
https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic67610.html I eventually removed the little fan thingy. Click image to enlarge It's an arse of a job to do and I lost most of the skin off my knuckles. I have just done my first long drive since its removal. My non scientific opinion is that the pick up from low RPM is better and overall the throttle response is smoother. While wrestling with the air box I remove the fan shroud. It was cold in the workshop so I checked the resistance of the viscous fan coupling. It should be free at low temperatures. It turned quite freely but there was a slight binding at one point in its rotation. A good squirt of oil soon freed it up. It has reduced the engine noise in the cab so that's an extra bonus. |

Just fitted an Alpine UTE 204DAB radio to replace the old Alpine unit. The new one is plug an play being the same make. The existing connection and microphone can be used. I added an extra wire for the display dimming function when the lights are on. I just picked up the illumination wire from the cigar lighter.
Click image to enlarge I also fitted the Nakatanenga DAB aerial https://www.nakatanenga.de/en/electrics/ap...FLEXANTDEF The original telescopic aerial was a bit the worse for wear after navigation of some Devon lanes. Very pleased with the result, I have set the display colour to green which matches in nicely with the other dials. I also now have access to many more radio stations. That looks like a real upgrade, compared to my 133BT. On the one pictured it says 204, you write about model #205. Both exist: which one you got? Thanks!

I purchased a set of Dirt Defenders a while ago and had them sprayed to match my Defender. Finally got around to fitting them today. Not had chance to try them out yet. I hope they will cut down the amount of crap that gets thrown up on to the door handles.

Quick update. I washed Lizzy before fitting the Dirt Defenders and today I’ve been down a couple of farm tracks that are still wet and have shallow puddles. Normally this would have flung mud up the sides. Those little extra wings make a huge difference, only a few small splashes made it up the sides. Very pleased with the result.

I need to stop mine rattling. It looks like replacing the felt is the first stop. Or maybe I just add a decal or two? Click image to enlarge Steve |

Just a quick update. On Tuesday we failed to proceed because the battery had lost its mojo and only had enough go to throw the solenoid. Thanks to great help and advice from this forum a new battery was order from Tayna; excellent value and delivered next day.
It was a bit of an arse to fit because I park Lizzy in the garage with the passenger door next to the wall. Having been left overnight on trickle charge, she started first pull this morning. I have a couple of tweaks in the pipeline, more updates soon. |

Steve - we lead parallel lives. I had that a couple of weeks ago. Same issue with the passenger door.
In my case, I have no power in the garage so had to dead lift the battery out of its hole from the driver’s seat. I took it home and charged it but decided to push the defender out of the garage to refit it from the passenger side. It is 50:50 whether dead lifting the battery was harder than pushing the defender out of the garage… |

A little bit of Optimil bling to brighten up the interior.
The door openers are a right PITA to fit. I kept the original plastic surrounds and they need to be trimmed to accept the Optimil alloy openers. If I never have to rummage inside a door again it will be too soon. The door handles do not come with black screws to match which I think is a bit cheap. For now I've used some silver ones I had in stock and a black Sharpie. Click image to enlarge |

Click image to enlarge A few weeks back I fitted Fox dampers all round. Certainly a big improvement, it's not a Range Rover but the ride quality is way better than the old standard dampers. The small bumps are handled better, you notice this on a farm track of town high street. The little ridges do not jolt like they used to. It's also much better on rough country B roads, the undulations are absorbed rather than bounced over. Not tried it fully loaded with camping gear yet.... Not an inexpensive option but worth the money FWIW. |
