Busy weekend chasing funny noises. For a while there's been a strange creak cum rattle coming from the front footwell somewhere. A quick search on this site soon told me it's not uncommon and gave me a list of suspects to check. I found that one of the bonnet hinges was loose and the little bolt on the floor under the handbrake was rattling in its hole. I'd missed that sneak little blighter when I did the floor panels. Once everything was tightened up the noises were gone
While I had the tools out, I fitted a Nakatanenga rear door gas strut. https://www.mudstuff.co.uk/products/defender-rear-door-gas-strut It works really well but does just catch the internal trim panel and pops it off one of the fixings. On the plus side because it keeps the rear door under tension when shut, it's also stopped the rear door rattling so much. Of course with one source of noise eliminated many more now make themselves noticed. It would not be a Defender if it did not rattle a bit. |

The rear gas strut shouldn’t foul anything - well mine doesn’t and it’s been fitted for years. Really great mod. It’d be interesting to see where it’s fouling if you can take a pic or two 👍[/i] |

Due to the wheel carrier and big wheels and tyres I had to fit the bracket on the door using the holes on the right to restrict the angle of opening. The body of the gas strut catches on the trim trim about half way through its arc.

Aha! Sorry I misread the description - I was referring to the later version which is mounted to the top of the door!

You can’t beat those seats Steve, best option on many levels as far as I’m concerned. One of the best things I ever did 👍
Looks like you just need a cubby box with a deeper cushion now that will make a big difference to comfort as well. |

I gave Lizzy a service over the weekend. Changed all the oils, filters and greased up.
If you have the ORE wheel carrier don't forget to squirt some grease in there too. The front diff oil was quite dark compared to the rear diff oil. The gearbox oil was clear, I feel happy leaving this one longer next time. The transfer case was darker, I'll add the larger cooling sump to it soon. All ready for some summer time adventures now... |

Click image to enlarge A fun morning at Rockingham 4x4 course with Ed Cobley. I've done the course before but in a modern LR full of electrickery; just select mud and ruts. Great to see what you can do with a mechanical Defender. My favourite comment from Ed. The Defender has wade depth sensors. When it starts coming in the doors, it's too deep.  |
