I have messaged Malcom at whitbread with all the questions
I will post his reply here once I get it along with Ian Baughan at IRB developments,

Thanks,

Apart from the 'sitting' further out on the whitbread one has / can anyone confirm it's as strong?

If they can modify it to fit at the front ad the SD one and its a strong then I'm happy to go down that route?

As you say already they are keen whereas the big boys don't want to know?

After thinking abut a cage for 7 years something will be better than nothing?

Just another consideration, having had a number of defenders with roll cages, as daft as it sounds, some insurance companies won't want to insure you going forward or won't even quote. I think it is due to the 'motorsport' connotations.

Ive had these figures from Ian Baughan at IRB Developments :-

Bear in mind prices are changing virtually every day at the moment.

Normal 110 CSW cage - RBL2427SSS - £1730 + vat

Blackwolf RBL1727SSS - £1880 + vat

Price is delivered to my workshop.

Payment in full required.

And will have to be a group buy.

Fitting - Standard 110 - £1500 + vat. Need the vehicle for a couple of days minimum... normally 3 days.

Malcom at Whitbread 4x4 has replied and said, I am awaiting prices off him :-
Hi our tube is a 48.3mm seamed tube. and I can sort out Documents for EU Members no problem.

I will update once I get some ball park prices off Malcom for his modified cages to hug closer to the body like the SD. 2008 Santorini Black 110 XS USW (Sold)

if Malcom gets the documentation for EU, would it be possible to have a sample of it to ensure that the Spanish (can not say the word we call them on a forum) would be able to verify that with that they would allow me to add it to the logbook.

To give you insight, a towbar has regulation 55R and thats Europe level, but in spain they needed an extra set of paperwork (cost as much as the towbar again) due to their ways of working Sad Searching for my first Defender...and started just as Covid hit, so talk about timing.

5 months after starting the search I found it, and here is the details

Good work Welshsurferdude Thumbs Up

So a std 110 cage is £2076 + £1800 fitting (is that done by you? as you mention your workshop)

Total £3876 Inc for the Safety device one?

On Whitbread website the std 110 cage is £1815 fitted / painted. I guess plus vat?

Total £2178 Inc (this is without any discount)

Unless this tube that whitbread mention "48.3mm seamed tube" is far worse than the SD one? what am I missing? Assuming it bolts to the same places / Strength is the same (and I see whitbread fit out mountain rescue trucks) and they modify it to be closer to the front window.

I'm all for buy the best, safest etc but not if its purely a Sticker on one that says SD? its almost £1700 difference?

Thoughts?

I think the bit about workshop referring to Ian @ IRB's as its his reply to WSD.
There might be something about tube difference too, seamed vs CDS which is inherently stronger.

Stacey is correct,

the Prices of the SD cages and fitting have been supplied by Ian at IRB and will be fitted at his workshop and paid in full to him directly.

I am awaiting Malcom of whitbread to reply with pricing.

There is a quite large price differential between the two as SD is a large corporate firm with resellers while Whitbread is a small family firm in rural Wales.

I can enquire on CDS tubing being specced into whitbread and see if that is possible. 2008 Santorini Black 110 XS USW (Sold)

from a roll cage point of view (race cars) they were normally CDS or T45 (T45 being stronger material) but most of the bolt in cages were CDS, thought some weld in ones were also CDS. Searching for my first Defender...and started just as Covid hit, so talk about timing.

Recieved this from Malcom At whitbread for his modified closer fitting cages

Kit form they would be all notched ready to weld together and coat/paint £1300+vat and carrage.

Fitted or our workshop £1800+vat painted and fitted. A internal hoop £500+vat +fitting (estimate £200-250 to fit. 2008 Santorini Black 110 XS USW (Sold)

Hello

So Whitebread £2160 fitted, Safety Devices £3876 fitted

Then leaves the tube strength?

38.3mm Seemed tube compared with CDS? this bit I have NO idea.... can someone technical can explain more?

Currently though we are driving round with foldable tin can above our heads? So either has to be a lot better than that. Whitbread have them fitted to competition cars, mountain rescue and over landers.. over 25 years of fitting them I think any issues would have come to light by now?

Did / could Whitbread supply the same tube? at least then its a like for like quote?

Good him him to modify it also and I guess easier if you want a light bar, rack extention etc added.

Thanks Thumbs Up

Hello

The fact that Malcolm (whitbread) makes these and seems to reply quickly, able to adapt parts etc does seem good Smile

I've had my 110 for 7 years now and its done some long road trips.... Alps, NC500, Sky, Orkney etc its about time I do something.

Checked with my insurance Liverpool Victoria and seems it makes little of no difference on the 110 along with all the other mods I have declared.

Cheers

Coming from a motorsport background, seamed tube is not really suited for roll cages.

Certainly you wouldn't be able to get a seamed tube cage signed off or pass scrutineering.

I appreciate that the cage requirements (and types/speeds of incidents) on a Defender may be different to that of many race cars, but I don't think that really changes matters in terms of material. Ultimately you want the cage to be strong and to protect you in the case of an incident. Whether that's a high speed impact, or a low speed roll.

CDS is chosen so that in the case of high loading (impact etc) the tubes don't split open.

T45 is even better (stronger), but my understanding is that the main advantage of T45 is that with its higher strength, you can use thinner walled material to save weight. I think this is probably less of an issue for our Defenders!

I like the idea of a cage on my 110, although I've got other priorities at the moment.
