A bit scary reading, but one question.
The car has some homologation from start, originally without those brackets. Did LR made new homologation with these brackets? Or how they made these brackets legal?
I think, it is the same principle, as bigger tires or better lamps - all must have some homologation to be legal on car. These brackets are important parts, not something like decals.

And even more interesting questions :

How could they replace homologated friction welds by these MIG welds ?

And could I possibly MIG weld the defective axle, too ? Like Land Rover does ?
Is that gonna pass the next MOT ?

And could I possibly MIG weld any safety relevant parts from other cars, too ?

Anyhow, mine is MIG welded and the welds are still looking fine ...

And still no letter inviting me to join a recall here in France which is relevant for my safety...

My vehicle had the magic brackets fitted some years ago so it lies within the affected vehicle. It has gone for the annual road worthiness test every year and no mention of the faulty welding ever came up. Unless they see cracks in the casing or leaking oil they will not bother about it. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Thanks Will the data is really helpful on the vin ranges.

I’m wondering if Martin would be able to set up a survey where individuals can highlight if their vehicle(s) full within the EU date range or vin range or just before or just after the vin or date ranges. including their profile name on here. Perhaps having a field to highlight if their axles have failed etc.

From that we can see the members impacted and If there are sufficient of us in our respective jurisdictions, I.e EU, UK etc then we can decide if we want to collectively flag this issue to the appropriate government bodies, press, social media etc

Seeing if other LR forums are aware of the issue and want to join us to pursue this is another idea.

Supposedly, things continue like that shaft in the drive train.
Land Rover finally pointing on the client making him responsible for that failure.
How could Land Rover be responsibe if a few cars fail while many others don't.
They said to me on the telephone.

One car with a faulty axle case should have been enough to get things rolling at Solihull. Sadly it seems they are going to ignore this. Like I said previously despite contacting our Minister for Transpost and the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission over here I have not even had a reply from either of them. I thought that once the EU got involved things would get moving but maybe this six months period given for Land Rover to act might have to roll out before they pursue Land Rover further.
I am thinking about notifying the umbrella organisation for the insurance companies. I wonder if they got the details and discussed this increased risk with their members, if they would contact Land Rover and say if they did not get a guarantee that the axles were safe their members will be uninsuring any Defender which was constructed between year "x" and year "z". Alternatively may insurance company could up my premium or refuse me cover altogether and leave it at that. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

I doubt that insurance companies would put pressure on Landrover, they would simply increase premia to reflect the increased risk. They all exchange information so if they were seeing enough axle-failure-induced crash claims they would realise it anyway.

It would be interesting to know if any of the popular motoring or consumer affairs TV programmes would run with the story. Bad publicity in large doses is a very effective lever.

Update 2/12/2022
I have been in contact with a number of bodies over here who deal with safety issues etc. I got a reply from one of them today who contacted Land Rover Ireland on my behalf. Land Rover Ireland have stated that my vehicle is not effected by the recall despite the fact that it was recalled to have the safety brackets fitted!
I just checked the calender to make sure this is not April 1st. To be continued.... 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Have you recently checked your VIN on TOPIx for outstanding recalls? I checked with my vin (affected) and with a 2009 vin, (not affected) and both cases it refers me to the retailer! 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

everyone just a quick update !!!!!

I have seen confirmation that JLR have been issued this order for recall by the EU.
I can also confirm that they need to action this asap. The source of my information is from the Government UK and they are awaiting JLR response into how they will carry this out !!

all the best

All thanks to you Thumbs Up Considering they told me it does not effect me inspite of the fact I had a recall for the brackets I do wonder what is going on! Will be interesting to see how this unfolds in the near future. Well done Payney1000 Bow down 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

That is great news Thumbs Up Thumbs Up
I hope that JLR is forced to recall all affected models, and not which they consider at more risk as what they have done with the catch brackets. All models of that particular era have the same case part number. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Dear All

Please see the letter revised today by the DVSA.
It highlights that the main recall 2014 did not cover all effected vehicles. It also confirms Recall is in place.

All the best

Thank you!

"... installation of a catcher bracket... It is understood that an increase in effort will be needed to steer the vehicle, but overall control and braking can be maintained."
Does this mean more brackets? Rolling Eyes
