3K Greeni Shocked & no gears Laughing You could get a really nice Series2 for that Wink

Talking of wich things just don't add up sometimes - an old guy I know has a 1981 mint Lancia Beta (horrible I know!) he bought it new for £3000 only uses it in the summer. It has only done 4000 miles and it's worth £3000. 3K just about gets you a set of tyres, winch/bumper and roofrack Rolling Eyes

Commencal Meta 5.5 - smashing-into-rocks bike


Cove Handjob made of old bits - riding-round-the-rocks bike

Also got an antique Santa Cruz Bullit for mucking about on, but don't seem to have any photos of that.

Used to do a fair bit of DH racing in the early/mid 2000s but these days it's mainly XC round the Lakes and further afield. Still get out to Spain or the Alps every year on the big bike to pretend I'm 23 again Laughing

This is actually mainly what I use Land Rovers for:




The off-road capability means that even when you're lazy and don't turn up to ride til midday, you can always find somewhere to park Laughing



Previously had a 2007 Commencal Meta 5.5 (sold it when I got scared it would snap), a Spesh Rockhopper, an Orange 222 (which is still alive and being raced somewhere) and a GT Lobo Shocked What an amusing bike that was. Any bigger than a 2.2" tyre and it would bottom out on the frame Rolling Eyes

Oh and it all started on a 1997 Kona Cinder Cone, which is still in the shed with a big crack in it Crying or Very sad

Back into night riding more often again and recently bought a Fenix TK21 (468 lumens) torch which I Lockblock to my bike lid - add that to the Luminous 601 (1700 lumens) main light and the countryside gets very well lit! Just been out - very fun indeed.

Fairly recently fitted X0 brakes so now all X0/XTR except the crank (XT). Now well under 22lbs - without the lights!! Defender 110XS SW gone... now VW California 180 4 Motion.

Van Nicholas / Rohloff

A home-build which has evolved over a few years. The oldest component is probably the seat post at several years. The Rohloff hub is about 4 years old, and the Frame/Forks are 2 years old.

For the build I tried to use as many British or European compinents as I could - it's Shimano/SRAM-free (apart from the rear calpier) I think!

Built for durability and comfort rather than all-out lightweight. I'm 14 stone, and just over 6 foot tall (i.e. at the higher end of a "industry standard rider"), and use it primarily in the trails around Cairngorms. Often in remote places (Burma Road, Loch Einich, Ryvoan) where there's no mobile reception. So the build is meant to be reliable & durable, the Rohloff Hub is stunning and maintenance free (just an annual oil change), and the mechanical disk brakes (with Venhill Featherlight cables) add to the reliability.

Most recent evolution was the Middleburn Cranks and Crank Bros pedals (a huge improvement over the Shimano predecessors):

Frame is Van Nicholas Titanium Mamtor (designed by Terry Dye in the UK)
Pike 140mm travel forks with thru axle for strength
Hope front hub
Rohloff 14-speed hub
Avid front mechanical 185mm disk, with Venhill Featherlight cables
Mavic All-Mountain Rims & DTSwiss spokes for strength
Middleburn Cranks & Crank Bros pedals
Mix of Easton & FSA finishings

Love it Thumbs Up

Many of the older components from this evolution (my old Merlin Malt2 frame, Marzocchi forks etc) are on my winter training bike (also used for trips to Tesco!). The Mamtor is about as developed as I want to go for now, so until something wears out, I'll just be riding it!

Also have a Orange 5 (full suss) which I use for racing (the bike on my avatar), and also for manmade-trails such as Glentress or the 7 Stanes. But this hardtail is my preferred bike for long distance trails. Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)

Nice build.
I used to give Crank Brothers pedals away, they used to be specced on Cannondales and stuff, they ALWAYS broke so we took them off and give them away (no comebacks then)!!
(was in the cycle trade for ten years Shocked )

I should put a pic of Mrs Greeni's bike on..it's cool!

I like the Brian Rourke you have shown on here - simple and meaningful! And a lovely personalised paint job.

The Crank Bros stuff has been really good so far, but only one season old! I'll keep my eye on them for any signes of weakness, thanks for letting me know Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)

My Crank Bros Mallets on the DH bike have been rebuilt something like 3 times in as many years.... fortunately always at Crank Brothers' expense! They work really well when they're working, but the bearing design is poor. There's one teeeeny ball bearing which locates the pedal horizontally on the axle. When this inevitably disintegrates, the pedal is free to move and can come all the way off the spindle, still clipped to your shoe Rolling Eyes

This happened to me halfway through a race before, not funny!

When I bought the Van Nicholas, I had been talking to a British frame builder - Enigma - about Stainless Steel, but there was a several month waiting list, and the price was a bit steep... Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)

953 demand was huge..... Steel rides soooo sweetly ! 853 Pro is the way to go.. I've had Merlin (usa) and Litespeed ti frames which are nice too.

I've got another custom frame on the way....watch this space Cool
