Love it! A bit like the old sturmey archer 3-speed many of us would have had as kids (showing my age). It's bombproof, and would be great for really gloopy rides where the mud renders a rear derailleur useless (last 10 under-the-ben race I couldn't get a reliable gearchange on SRAM after half-a-lap it was so clagged-up). Getting common at events like Strathpuffer (24-hour winter race) for that reason. It's a similar weight to all the gubbins you need on a normal 27 (or 30) speed bike. The hub is heavy, but then again, you only need 1 ring on your crankset, and no 9/10 speed rear cassette, no front mech etc etc. Chain life is good. Currently running a rohloff-specific KMC, but a mate is getting me a Rohloff chain as well. Ideal config would be on a singlespeed frame (like yours!), so you can do away with teh chain tensioner and save that weight and complexity (the tensioner is still a possible damage spot, but it's a pretty beefy bit of germanic engineering, and it would save some weight). I really like it's character, it whirrs a bit in lower gears, but they are bombproof (apparently used on Tandems quite a lot because of their strength). Two improvements could be made: 1. trigger shifters rather than the twistgrip 2. best way to get a smooth change is to take pressure off the pedals momentarily (like an old sturmey archer) otherwise you can get a false neutral. (but unlike derailleur you can select any gear whilst stationary...). All in all I really like it! Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's) |

That Maxlight looks as though it's a very light build? Have you weighed it?
Looks like you;ve just come up a steep hill, in 1st gear there! Nice pic! Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's) |

Martin K
Id just ridden up the hill from Betsw-y-coed to the lake above the town (coming back down was fun) not done the Marin Trail which is just up the road but have done loads of shorter good routes in the vicinity. The chap whom's accomodation I stop in runs cycle tour business out of Betsw-y-coed and has a TD5 defender 110 and RR Sport (he is living the life). My bike is light has carbon bars and very light stem, seat and seat post but is let down by the rear casette, cranks, pedals, and magura julie's however it works well and all my spare cash is now aimed at the landy so it will have to stay as it is for now. Never weighed it but will today. DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS, I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy |

Reason I'm wondering is I dug out a rather nice DMR head stock earlier that I have no use for any more. |

As the thread has been resurrected !
I built mine up over a few months from mostly second hand bits from ebay and various MTB forums, definitely a bitsa but it goes well Mostly XC use. X9 shifters and mechs but XT crank as the press fit BB in the frame limits the options when it comes to second hand parts. Took a couple of months to get all the parts together after I picked the frame up. |
