Puma 2.2 Air Con Kit - Performance issues
Hi to everyone, also new here and my first post.

I had just installed and aircon kit on my 2012 2.2 90. Initially, it works quite well, but after running on a very hot day here in Athens Greece, seems like the air is not cooling anymore, maybe after 20-30 mins continuous running. This is observed only on the very hot days >32-35 C onwards. Even when running on the highway does not seem to do any difference. I usualy close the aircon for about 2-3 mins and then restart it and it goes good again for another 20-30 mins. I suspect due to the hotter climate here it should be the cooling fan maybe? Do I need a bigger fan? is there anyone you suggest? or any other idea?

Thanks

Dimitri

The original air con can suffer from freezing up, mine does and switching off for a few minutes cures it. However mine normally takes longer than that to freeze up. Andy

Hi Andy thanks for your message. Do you recon it needs a double fan on the radiator? It usualy freezes quicker when running on the highway for some reason and less when in town. I dont understand why this is happening. Do you think a kenlow fan would make a difference? the one that came with the kit seems pretty small.

Thanks

Which kit did you fit? Sounds like the condenser or the fan is too small > 110 XS Double Cab

I got it from supertweaks. The fan looks like it covers not more than 50% of the grill

It is the evaporator (the internal radiator behind the dashboard) that could freeze.
The condenser (the external radiator infront of the intercooler/engine radiator) is releasing energy (hot air) outside.

If freezing is the issue, check if different fan speed settings make a difference.
Check also if it makes a difference between recycling the air in the cabin (which would become dryer, and hence less prone to condense and freeze up), vs fresh air setting, where the air would be more humid. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

In the original air conditioning there is a sensor on the evaporator which is supposed to disengage the compressor if the evaporator starts to freeze. This is known to fail and lead to the above symptoms. Its a pig to replace as the whole heater unit needs to come out.

Thank you for your recommendation although I think it is very rare for a new air-con unit to have a faulty sensor. It is strange that when I run in town under city speeds the aircon does not freeze up that much as opposed to when on the highway at high speeds. Does this make any sense to anyone?
