How about fabricating something like this? everything on the market is basically over priced crap and I wouldn't trust with my 20k of bikes.
Made it years ago but it was too heavy / awkward. Anyway fast forward, I have a e bike in the stable now, too heavy for lifting onto the roof so made some modifications, Absolutely perfect rack now... will be powder coated grey as the orange was never my thing although it matches the new bike. I like your design but I am afraid that fabricating is well beyond my skill set.

Hi Trailbear
I am assuming that you have a towbar? I have a Dixon Bate slider type, an extension piece to move the tow all out beyond the spare wheel. The bike rack is a Thule two bike folding rack. This folds up to the size of a medium suitcase and is easy to store in the garage or in the back of the 90 when out. I have a Kenevo and the wife has a Levo. Your rack has to be a wheels on rack, the frame supported racks won’t carry the weight plus the weird frame / shock positions means the bikes would lean at odd angles. A towbar mounted, wheels on rack will also be future proofed if you change bikes down the line. I like the rack mounted up as high as it will go go, so no, I cannot open the rear door with the bikes in place. Possible could if I had it in the lowest setting but never tried. I’ ll post a picture when I find it. Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge |

That was the kind of set up I was thinking of.
I like the high position of the rack and getting in the back door wouldn’t really bother me that much. I have a NAS rear step with the 2 position towball fitted so I ‘m not really sure if the extension piece would fit on my towball. Where did you source the extension piece from? Perhaps there is an extension piece solution for my towbar setup, I would have thought that there would be. |

Taken from the original post
Hope this helps Picked up the extender and bike rack this morning from Dave Cooper; he said he can build extenders but that they are sold only on the understanding that they are not for towing. Give him a call if you want one on 01732 820082. Here is the extender, 24.5 cms: Original thread on the same subject https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic33815.html |

I had a similar problem and found the tow bar off a Disco 2 worked well. Found one on eBay from a scrapper. Works perfectly as I can still tow my 2 tonne car and trailer, plus get in the back with the bike rack on. I don't have a wheel carrier on mine, just the original bracket on the door, but assuming your wheel carrier holds the wheel the same distance off the door then it should be fine.

There’s a Discovery 2 tow bar on eBay at the moment.
I know you don’t need the rest of the kit but as the tow bar is like hens teeth it’s worth a thought, especially as a local scrap yard might give you some money for the rest as scrap. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/284364331583 |

I've just purchased a Purruzo Instinct Pure
I have 2 E-MTB's so are quite long and heavy, i quickly worked out i needed the extensions for the wheels and straps, i must say it is very well made and very solid. i was quite hesitant at first due to the weight but my mind was put at ease when it was fitted. 2016 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 TDV8 2010 110 XS Utility 2.4TDCI 2010 Range Rover Sport TDV8 (gone) 2007 Discovery HSE TDV6 (gone) 1993 110 csw 200 tdi (gone) 1994 90 HT 300 tdi (gone) 1994 discovery 300tdi (gone) 90 hybrid 3.5 v8 (gone) Range rover bobtail 3.5 v8 (gone) |

For the heavier e-bikes I'd be tempted by a motorcycle carrier

Thought the nose weight of the towball was only 100kgs - is the weight of the bike entirely on the towbar?
Perhaps the bike weighs less than 100kgs? |

Gents
Thanks for the replies and suggestions, I am very grateful for them. I am going to look at the Perruzo and from what has been said that may fit the bill. I am watching the tow bar on flea bay but it is collection only which doesn’t work for me but I will think it over. I will be travelling down to London with the Landrover next month so I will have a look at options. Bear100 Do you have a swing away on the back door or is it the original door carrier? I have a 265 R16 BFG all terrain fitted on the carrier so I would have to take that into account also. |

You will need to buy a tow bar bracket extension picture below (£25), which will take you passed the spare wheel carrier (i have the ORE swing away which i believe is further from the door) once set up and tightened on the ball its very solid. my E bikes are long so i had to purchase extensions for the wheels pictured below (£20) and some strap extensions (£10)

That’s perfect as I have the ORE swing away as well so that would work for me👍
