Can’t program keys on ex Cat X Defender 2007
Hi there guys, am struggling to get key programmed to my vehicle it’s a 57 plate 2007 defender 90 CSW XS

Bought the vehicle ex stolen recovered so came with no keys, I have replaced barrel with genuine unit with two genuine Land Rover keys and I have bought 2 Lucas fobs that need programmed obviously.

I have noticed a loose plug next to the ignition barrel that looks to me like the ignition exciter ring is missing the black plastic thing that should plug in there? (Ignition anti theft transceiver?)
The key programmer came out and his scanners read ecu disconnected, even though it isn’t. Would this exciter ring have caused this? Picture attached of loose plug

I also found 2 alarm relative fuses under drivers seat weren’t giving readings so they were changed. So now maybe the key programming will work? I don’t know.

The wires haven’t been snipped between seat boxes, or 10as unit hasn’t been touch etc the only out the norm thing I can see is that loose plug?

I don't think it will work without the exciter ring as that's how the system recognises the key fobs. Darren

Hello Jgh112

I agree with LRA, as I understand this component is an induction loop that 'handshakes'
with the Key Fob by close proximity telling everything (AS10 / ECU) to work... or something like this.
The result is that the Key has been recognised.

It's this component that needs to find a close by new home if you fit an XDEFEND Steering Lock.

I don't know, but potentially this ring needs 'paring' with your system, hopefully someone
will know and be along shortly...

I'm struggling to remember the exact sequence since it is so long since mine last misbehaved (and I hope that hasn't jinxed it now).

As far as I recall, the exciter coil round the lock barrel is only used by the passive immobiliser and it is possible to switch off the PI without affecting the remainder of the system. The remote locking and active immobiliser works off the buttons on the plip and has no connection with the exciter coil.

It should, as far as I know, be possible to programme a key to the 10AS without the coil being fitted, and it is possible that the fuses may have been the issue.

My concern with this vehicle if it was stolen and recovered (unless stolen using the the keys) is how the thieves made off with it. They must have done something to disable the immobiliser, and it may be that whatever they have done is causing you a problem. If they simply blew the fuses on the 10AS and indicator feeds, and removed the exciter coil and knocked the lock off the column, they would not be able to start the engine. Therefore they must have done more.

I guess the question is, when it was stolen recovered they may have loaded it onto a trailer and that's why they have only broke the steering lock and maybe removed the ignition transceiver coil? Is the 57 plate definitely mean't to have a ignition transceiver that goes round the barrel? I have attached a photo of the loose plug but is that what that plug is for? (photos below)

So have checked all fuses and wiring and nothing seems to be out of sorts, seatbox wires they usually cut, and the alarm flashes when ignition is switched on so I don't think it has been running to be honest. It appears very dry underneath and solid as a rock so wouldn't surprise me whether they nicked it with the intent to do it up in the future or even just for parts...?

Need to know what this plug is for, have a ignition coil transceiver coming tomorrow part number AMR4897, its a obsolete part from land rover but a specialist down the road from me has one fingers crossed.

10AS green box seems untouched so that should be fine. Has anyone else got fuse F40 missing from their main fuse box under next to drivers side speaker? should be a tan 5a blade fuse.

Do you guys reckon that would've been why the key guys scanner was unable to read the ECU, and said ECU disconnected. He used MVP and Londsdor scanners both never worked, however he said they haven't worked with defenders in the past, so could be software issue also?

Generic key programmers won't touch it, you'll need a LR specific tool (Nanocom etc)  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Ah ok the nanocom makes sense so that’s maybe why he couldn’t read the ECU at all?
I have a launch diagnostics scanner coming which I know reads land rovers and also does key programming but not sure if anyone has tried on a launch system?
