Smyles_ Cummins 130 Build Thread
In the words of the great DJ Khaled, "another one."

I now very proudly own a second Defender at the ripe age of 23 with this Cairns Blue 130, in what feels like entering the VIP section of an already exclusive club given the 130's rarity.

I am the fourth owner of this dignified barbarian, with the previous owners being SSE, a tree surgeon, and some other geezer in between.

Being an ex-SSE battle bus it comes with some goodies such as diesel heater and heavy duty chassis from factory - a chassis which to our delights is in very good condition - credit to the previous owners! Bow down

Words nor pictures really quite show the scale of this ARB tipper box - its like having the body of a 90 back there.

So, a brief overview of the short term master plan...
Conduct a complete nut & bolt rebuild

Shot blast, galvanise, paint and Dinitrol the existing chassis

Uprate the drivetrain with a veritable assortment of Winchester Gears and Ashcroft parts

Better brakes (demanded from a liability standpoint Razz )

Bolt a Safety Devices climbing frame to the exterior (too tall and lanky for an internal hoop spec Banging Head )

Transfer my portable upstairs living quarters over

Complete respray to a classic yet bold Land Rover colour (budget permitting Question ) I'll be awarding 10 imaginary internet points to the member who guesses correctly

Oh, and slap a stonking big 5.9L Cummins 6BT in the front end with the legendary Bosch P7100 mechanical injection pump. Stock it will produce circa 300 bhp and a torque figure that I shall deem as suffice (for now Twisted Evil ).

So if you or, anybody you know is after a recently rebuilt 2.4TDCi engine and drivetrain, hit me up in the PMs. Same goes for that lovely ARB tipper w/ hydraulics that are only 4 to 5 years old - although I may already have a buyer, you know who you are Wink I'll be selling many parts that come off, here on the forum. Thumbs Up

But for now I need think as to where best slather my Defender2.net window stickers (shameless plug).

This will be very much a stage-by-stage build (paycheck-by-paycheck Whistle), with interior overhaul being one of the latter. But for now here's a cheeky teaser Mr. Green

Since loosing my original Graduate position in Aberdeen ( Censored you Coronavirus) I also lost access to a garage and workshop space to where I was planning to conduct such a build myself - I am an engineer afterall. So, instead it's being built by the terrific chaps at Stagshaw with the added benefits of it probably (by which I mean definitely and unquestionably) being built far quicker and to exceptional standard.

Given my photographic ineptitude, as illustrated above, I recommend you give Stagshaw a follow on Instagram (@Stagshaw) if you at all like Defenders or this build. I'll eventually pluck the courage to start my Defender's own Instagram (I may be young but I despise social media), which I'll post below at a later date if you wish to follow, step-by-step, my crippling Defender shaped financial decision making! Very Happy

Of course, no single self-sufficient twenty-year-old can justify such ownership of two gallant steeds as fine as these. And so, I will be saying au revoir to my beloved 110 Double Cab to assist in financing this build, as sadly, Bank of Mum & Dad don't exist for me.

Tis all for now until next week. Thumbs Up

P.S. I don't expect many on here to get that opening line given our demographic, don't worry Laughing
P.P.S. If you have children, don't ever tell them that they can't buy themselves something. Some will go out their way to defy and prove them so very wrong. This ones for you Mum! Ner Ner Stuart

Thanks lads! Thumbs Up

I can barely get to sleep at night with all the excitement! Been conjuring up this build in my head and on Excel for the past 3 years and it's finally about to start. It'll take at least another year to get it exactly where I want regarding auxiliary items, interior and sound system etc but, I hope to have a solid foundation by the end of the following few months. Very Happy

And don't worry there will be plenty photos to come interspersed with videos I have no doubt.

God knows - try flog it here or eBay?! Failing that, add it to my collection of Defender guff for an eventual "garage clear-out" once I deem the level of collected dust thick enough. Shame really, as I low key rather like it due to its practicality and immense strength. I often find myself balancing on the sills of my current 110 to load things on the rack. Confused

Again, if anybody wants anything from the 130 that they see let me know and I can tell you if its available. Thumbs Up Stuart

Ok, there has been progress!

We were restricted from starting the build until we could sell the tipper which, today was finally shifted Very Happy

It'll now be mated to a Hilux I believe.

I frankly cannot get over how good a condition the chassis is in given its working history and age. Seeing what others are selling these 130s for I feel like I got the deal of the year and practically stole it!

It's all original factory paint with no wax oil or other treatment. No holes where holes shouldn't be and the outriggers are in fab shape also.

The plan is to get the chassis removed from the body and away for shot blasting by the end of the week.

Today I spent most of the afternoon with wet wipes in hand and giving Henry the hoover a proper workout. Being a working truck for an arborist there was plenty mud and woodchips bloody everywhere!

Was great to see the old steed too alongside.

Again, thoroughly chuffed to see the amount of deserved customers Stagshaw have at the moment given the climate and how short a time they've been on the scene - testimony to their unparalleled service!

(there's even more hiding in the back of shot!)

I've also put a deposit down for a P-pump 6BT with only ~60 hours and a rebuilt transmission so that'll be coming along nice too Cool

My next step is to shift the roof rack, engine and transmission to add to the money pot Mr. Green

Nope, although I'm sure the shop owner would love for that - believe it's his favourite Twisted Evil
