^ that would be so much easier
But then I don't need any Gym membership (even if I could) as I've moved I don't know how many tonnes of crush, sleepers, posts, wood, metal and blocks etc I've lost count. I'm far from over either, I know all the local building supply truck drivers Still I plod on and I can see some progress so all good |

I've done my share in the past so you have my sympathies but it is rewarding.
Mind you there's a difference in scale here - I'm not sure I'd want to hand ball 150 tonnes of shale to make the driveway and pack it down. Plus the extra 100 tonnes that was stockpiled for backfilling Ed 82 Hotspur Sandringham 6x6 95 Defender 110 300Tdi |

Weather has changed again and its very wet, I've been digging holes ready for the steel beams, which is fun...anyway I've plodded on and hopefully they are almost ready.
The beams arrived today so after work I had to see if they at least fit and 'look' right. So now more aggregate, cement, sand on order ready to concrete in. Not to mention 25 or so sleepers to slide in. Levels and everything need checking but if gives you the idea... the Soil raised up is much higher than the finish level so will be spread all over the garden. Looking good - I had a very similar problem to solve as you, the old garage just had the earth piled up against it! I used Gabions filled with local Cotswold stone, took me forever to get the right size / shape stones to fit each basket.

Make sure to put a membrane (Geotex or similar) behind that wall or you'll find the soil being washed out between the joints. Darren

I've sorted a membrane behind the wall and underneath where each of the first beam sits.
Then started digging out where the ramp will go up into the garden.. (the sides) Click image to enlarge test fit to see the levels... Click image to enlarge just ordered some long 12mm wood drills to drill right through this lot and use rebar to hold them in place, with garden each side they are not going anywhere.... So also finished the block work for the surround. Click image to enlarge Then took on the forth road bridge of jobs... to smarten up the fence along side... Current panels look like this... with slight gaps between. Click image to enlarge 300m worth of wood later we have started cladding 'our' side after painting the panel behind.. Click image to enlarge Worth the effort as fence now look new... trouble is it just keeps going... think around 17 panels and that doesn't include the 'normal panels to the left which I need to do) however Mrs is happy and too be fair a bit of a change from digging and moving stuff for me. Click image to enlarge So also working out when we spread the soil back over the garden the whole garden will be levelled out better but also be raised up... So just test fitting where I will sort some edging out... Click image to enlarge I've been kept busy after work and the weekends that's for sure, its starting to come together now and looking more (in my eyes) done. Hopefully not too much longer working in wet , muddy soil / mud / clay. Still need to dig out for the drains... and many other jobs but.... its all good. |

That looks a big job!! but impressive!
If it were me I'd want to paint the steelwork with a black bitumastic paint (or at least the unfinished steel channel) for protection. ^ The job has grown...
typically, you do one thing it has a knock on affect to others, The steel that is sunk in the ground has a metal preserver on it, the bit sticking up I will probably paint with something more suited if on show. However I think in the bigger picture I will box the steels in... Pretty sure either way the wooden sleepers will rot before the steels. They will have to look 'nice' to get signed off from the boss. The fence wasn't even on the list of things to do but I might as well do now and make it neat for the 'new build' trouble is even on its own its a big job Thanks for feedback and comments, I'm enjoying it and its quite satisfying knowing I've done it... I cannot imagine the labour cost so far if I paid for all this work. |
