It's an interesting debate around whether to restore to 'factory' finish or not, which I guess isn't such an issue with more ordinary classic cars. I think that because Land Rovers can lead such interesting and varied working lives, there's more of an interest in keeping the outward signs - the battle scars and patina. Darren

I wonder where he got that idea from? i did look into it in quite some detail, only found evidence of bronze green vehicles and grey vehicles having them, outside of that would be special order, such as my SEB 109"s. The build card on my series III actually states "wheels to be completed in body colour" as it was not standard. They do seem to have experimented a bit in the very early series II days, for example there were more than one shades of grey paint available, for example a rather dark grey shade, but they were quickly dropped. Grey vehicles dod have grey wheels at the very start but again it was dropped very quickly. I was once told that blue vehicles had white wheels (as opposed to limestone) but I don't know how correct that is. There is a factory document somewhere which lists all the colour combinations. It is your vehicle, but not taking Philip's advice (he does know a thing or two about values of old Land Rovers ) was a mistake, I'm afraid. If used, the shininess will wear off and it will become an "older restoration". With a vehicle that was so original (even the hard top with no windows is rare) the wisest choice would have been to keep it as original as possible, because there are an increasing number of restored/re-painted vehicles, and a decreasing number of nice, unmolested (or sympathetically brought back to life) originals. Too late now though, and I hope you enjoy it - because it does look nice. |

To some extent I would have to agree. But it was never the aim of the project to have the patina kept.
I think that if it had been kept looking as found, it would get used more than it does. It really ought to have PPF applied but maybe that’s something to consider in the future. One thing I sorely regret is that there was a seriously low mileage (5,170) Series 1 LWB truck cab in the auction and I didn’t bid on it. Radiator panel and horn position were the two most obvious ones to me I have to say though that I don’t think I have seen the bonnet prop on that side on a 109 before.

Diesels on one side, petrols on the other?
The other interesting thing about that barn find is the sleeved holes in the No2 crossmember for fitting a capstan winch. My diesel 109" doesn't have them. |

I’d love to know what’s happened to the 109” as I haven’t seen or heard anything about it since the auction in 2018.
I think the mileage was probably correct. It was kitted out with a tank and spraying equipment in the rear bed, so I suspect it spent its life just doing laps of the farm. Just stumbled upon this thread & rather enjoyed viewing the rebuild & thought the finished article to be simply stunning, in fact beautiful!
The pros & cons of restoring to factory finish are I think a personal thing & in testament to this I had my XS serviced yesterday at EH Douglas Wardington (excellent indy if anyones local to Banbury area) & when I dropped it off I saw a lovely, shall we say 'patina'd' (is their such a word?) 88" Series 2 & enquired if it was a barn find, only to be told it was a daily runner & that it was just in for a routine service, it was equally beautiful in a working lived in sort of way & I wished I'd taken a photo to present to you all. Finally, like the 109 mentioned, most of us have long lost Land Rovers & I often wonder what happened to my 1957 Series 1 496 NRF, its no longer on the DVLA data base so I'm assuming its long gone but I'm thinking of starting a thread 'Long lost Land Rovers...anyone know their whereabouts' as I'm sure with the plethora of knowledge & ownership history of folks on this forum many of the long lost Land Rovers will have passed through lots of hands...or am I being over optimistic?!?! Seriesonenut...Yes its an obsession! The last sighting of my S1 was in Lancashire helping out towing a trailer for a house renovation, after that the trail went cold...I still live in hope its sat forlorn in a shed or similar somewhere just waiting for me...my wife has told, or rather instructed me on more than one occasion "just let it go"!!!
