That’s the thing. There won’t be any worries about whether it’s in need of any work for many years to come now. Yes it has the wrong manifold as we simply couldn’t find the correct one at the time. We later found one in Germany but it was going for a stupid price. I’m not sure of the engine number but the chassis no. is 141900726. That looks very nice indeed although a brave choice to change the colour and body style. Did it need much in the way of repair to the chassis and bulkhead or was it more cleaning and painting? Darren

It needed a new gearbox crossmember and rear crossmember. I think the rest was all fine and only required blasting, painting, and then waxing. The bulkhead needed blasting and some very, very minor repairs. It seemed that the mud caked onto the chassis saved it! Charlie

No doubt a lovely and well executed restoration but being a 58, personally I would have gone through it mechanically, repaired the chassis and bulkhead where it was needed and just cleaned up the body, also I would have kept the hard top, IMO original vehicles that haven’t had their history erased are much more interesting than the shiny restorations, again just my personal opinion and preference.

The chassis number shows it's a 1958 built 59MY hence the 2.25 engine rather than 2 litre.
Must admit I'm in agreement with others, whilst it's a top notch resto I would have kept the original body style and paint on that particular donor. The choice of body colour wheels is interesting. Although bronze green vehicles had matching wheels, other colours didn't aside from grey on very early 1958s (even then they were all factory use vehicles) but I guess it makes it distinctive? I'm going for black wheels on my light green 88" as that was its company colour scheme. I can only hope mine ends up half as tidy as yours, something to aspire to! 2011 110 USW 1973 Series III 1-Ton 1972 Series III 1-Ton Cherrypicker 1969 IIA 1-Ton 1966 IIA 88" |

A very impressive restoration. I can say from my experience that it is sometimes a very difficult decision to make, whether to restore or rebuild, or replace.
Top job though, and a lovely vehicle has emerged. 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV 1966 S2a 109 aka Betsy |

It wasn’t until we’d made the decision to restore that we realised quite how many special little features this ‘58 has! The other thing was that if we’d found something that had been ruined with checker plate and lights etc it would have increased the already eye watering bill to put right. Ah, makes sense then! It was registered in November ‘58, I think, but has a selection of parts from throughout ‘58. For example, I think the Serck radiator is stamped July. It does have a few Series 1 parts that were clearly still in supply. Of interest, the passenger side windscreen wiper motot is dated ‘60. Clearly an addition by the then owner! In regards to the colour coded wheels, Philip Bashall was convinced it would have had them had. Whether or not it actually should have, I think they suit the vehicle matched! Thanks! Yes I think if a Series 1 does ever become a family member then that’ll just be given a mechanical resto. One problem of having such a high quality restoration is that driving anywhere is always a bit terrifying. There’s always the threat of a stone chip or scratch Charlie 1949 Series 1 80 (SOLD) 2002 Td5 90 (SOLD) 2008 Freelander 2 (SOLD) 1958 Series 2 88 Pastel Green (2019 LR Legends Best Restored) 1983 V8 110 Limestone (Previously owned by Tom Sheppard MBE) 2004 Td5 90 Santorini Black (Td5INSIDE Powered & Rebuilt by CSK) 2012 Puma 110 Zermatt Silver (Overlanding Build) Instagram: @BaronDefenders |

I know the feeling! I finished my own rebuild last summer and it’s been sat in garage for most of the time since. I did take it for a run around the block the other day when the roads were dry!
It’s nice to give it a polish though, something you don’t often hear in Land Rover series circles. Click image to enlarge 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV 1966 S2a 109 aka Betsy |
