2004 Defender 90 Td5 CSW Santorini Black

1958 88” Series 2

I thought a thread on our Series 2 might be of interest to some, so here you are!

It’s a 1958 88” Series 2 with the 2.25L petrol. We found it in Stanton Harcourt in a farm clearance auction. There’s no evidence to suggest that it ever had a home other than this one farm! With an Oxford reg and being on an Oxfordshire farm, it seems probable. As you’ll see from the photos, it was very original bar indicators.

I’ll do a post per stage of the process. Mostly so I can keep track of what I’m uploading!

Having had a look around and a realised it wasn’t too shabby, we bid on it. A few days later it was on its way to Dunsfold DLR!

Once at Dunsfold DLR, Philip Bashall confirmed what we had hoped. It was indeed a very unmolested and original example of an early Series 2. After a throughly good scrub everything looked better than expected.

The strip down begins! At this point we’d made the decision to convert it to a truck cab and change the colour to pastel green.

And then here it was at LR Legends 2019. Finished days before the show.

It went on to win the Best Restored for 2019.

It spent most of its 2019-2020 life in storage at Jordan’s, but it’s now at home waiting to be used come the summertime.

2007 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 DCPU Stornoway Grey

Nice! That must be a very early 2286cc engine if it's in a '58.

If I am to be brutally honest I preferred it with its original patina and as a hardtop, but it's your vehicle and your choice. It looks stunning restored.

That was a quick restoration

The restored pictures show top notch quality. It is always very difficult to decide a full restoration or maintaining the patina. Full restoration however protects all the metal underneath, with modern paint technology. For my 90 restoration I chose the latter. Of course a 90 does not have the heritage value of a series, so just hope it will age nicely again when it is turns 60 years old. I hope I am still around then, and can still fuel up rather than charge up

Probably not much compared to the costs of the restoration. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing
