I like it, but there's one problem with it.

It's not a Defender. Just like they did with the XJ. Brilliant car with great history. The new XJ is amazing, pure class leading, but it's not an XJ. Although I did think it was time for a re-design, just not a re-image.

This new Defender is nice, but it's not what the Defender is all about.

There is so much to lose here, but I'm sure JLR think they know what they are doing, maybe?

The average "Jones the Sheep" isn't going to be interested in something like this? The whole idea with the Defender is you can buy it in "comes with nothing but a steering wheel" form for the agricultural world.

How many 1 year old Defenders have you seen that are already dented, rusted and had a hard life in the field? I just can't see this being a vehicle that would be wanted by them.

That's a lot of sales gone, there are a lot of farmers with them.

Then there's other things, milatary, electricity board, etc.......

I can only guess that they know what they are doing as most sales currenty must be to people that don't need the ruggedness of a Defender.

I just don't get it? I like it, but not as a replacement. Craig Rogers

most farmers are frugal people and have left land rovers for L200 s because the base price is considerably lower. they are going to buy a £10k truck that lasts 10 years not a £20k truck that lasts 20 years.

some estates (country not car) are loyal to the brand and will purchase base models for their woodsmen; game keepers, farm managers etc. but initil purchase cost would have a large bearing of the chosen vehicle.

Don't like the price tag though 38-44k, 3.5t only has a 800kg payload. Original Member Pie n Pea Club.

Imagine if Solihull came up with a real killer replacement for the Defender and left us all putting up posts here saying how silly we were to buy our current Defenders and not wait for the replacement.
Imagine if the replacement Defender was so good that past models no longer had a market and we could not sell them to part fund a new one.
I suppose if I keep on imagining these things I will be accused of being on "illegal substances".
Still anything is possible....
Then I remember that accountants run the show and deal in figures and targets and bonuses and not vehicle integrity.Oh well back to Earth... 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

That's the problem, the Defender is not a highly profitable model for them, the BBC seem to suggest only 2 million of Defenders,90s, series III e.t.c have been sold in total.

Quote:
The first Land Rover was introduced in 1948 and its basic design has changed little over the past six decades. More than two million have now been sold.

They many mean that only 2,000,000 Defenders have been sold

That's pretty low, considering there are 32,000,000 Toyota Carollas and 12,000,000 Ford Focuses. They are obviously aiming for a more main stream market.

Add to that they can't rely on supplying to Utility and Military anymore. Editor of FunRover - One blog. Read it!

+1 to Robert Pepper! Thumbs Up

We know LR are not necessarily designing the DC100 to only appeal to the offroad/overlanding fraternity, as that market is way too small.
BUT I think if they do very much keep that market in mind, the new Defender (if it's good enough) will still find a much wider audience than it does now, and will hopefully also be all the 'cooler' for it.
There are many people who want a Defender, but just can't live with it as it is - we've seen a few on here recently, now selling up.

Fingers crossed, there's years to go yet!
