Do Mercedes not make a profit on the Unimog? That is a 100% utility vehicle that sells less than the Defender. I see no reason why Land Rover do not develop the Defender as a 100% utility and avoid all this current bureaucratic safety crap. Let them release this other thing and call it what they like.
In this day and age, image and advertising seem to be the be all and end all. I am sure Land Rover spend a lot keeping the Land Rover brand out there and in peoples subconscious. Surely a top notch Defender would be an ideal advertising tool encompassing all that is desirable in a car, i.e strength, ruggedness, versatility and great in winter. People like to aspire to these things but few-apart from us- actually go down that route. Most people buy a car that points them in that direction and makes them feel like they have the "real thing".
Let the design team work out how the existing Defender can be modified, as little as possible to meet whatever briefs are necessary. If the passenger car market is too restrictive, take the Defender out of it.
I like the Puma and think it is a wonderful car to drive. Maybe if they went down the road I am suggesting it would no longer be suitable as a family car but it's integrity would be intact. It would be a wonderful advertising tool for Land Rover and it would help them sell more of the stuff that the masses want.
Widen it a little to get airbags in. Give it a an internal roll cage discretely built in to the interior for roll over integrity and entrance to the U.S market. As for the frontal modifications, just enough tinkering to get it legal.
The Unimog is a very capable vehicle but it does not make for a good family car. Somewhere between the Unimog and the current Defender lies the answer. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Haha, the long wheelbase version (I'm not calling it a 110) looks even better! Talk about classic proportions. They seem to have gone with the 'nosedive' look. Oh dear Land Rover, is this what it has come to? I think I'd rather see Defender killed off for good and have the memories! 2005 Td5 | 90 Station Wagon | Tonga Green

I'm sad to say but the 5 door looks kinda nice - do something with the front end, some easily replaceable plastic sills & arches............Not a third world fix it with a coat hanger workhorse maybe, but surely current Defender will be built in India for those who still want / need one?

I like how the long wheelbase does its own thing with shadows - its shaddow starts in the same place as the swb, yet the shadow from the door mirrors is further back. I think it's a case of stretchy-stretchy on photoshop. Peter

I must be in the minority but I think it's bloomin fantastic!

No one else really produces a decent off roader still apart from LR so this can only be a success.

Time to move on and embrace something new me thinks Thumbs Up Andy

Yes please! This one even has vents under the windscreen Thumbs Up

As for the front, pedestrian safety requires some roundness there, but you could slope it like the Wrangler, giving the illusion of straightness, and have forward facing lamps behind the slanted lamp covers. Fixing the front would go a long way to improving this concept. As well as reintroducing the vents (imagine how much Landy fanatics would be willing to forgive if we got those back!).

Oh and I hate the tyres and the stupid plastic edge protection that all 4x4s seem to want to have these days. How useless is that in even the mildest of terrain?

I want to see something that wouldn't look totally dumb parading with the MOD in Afghanistan.

Oh, another definition of a good Landy:

it will take me no more than 5 minutes to replace any light bulb.

I was just thinking the same, If I were Landrover I would.

What they should do is invite a random group of possible customers/enthusiasts etc and have a brain storming day?

Other industries do this, some good thing come out too. A lot of these engineers / designerds are not as clever as they think they are.

If it looks a bit more like this I would be happy.

Apologies for the crappy small picture.

I like it square off the front a tad ,not some thing to be taken apart and fiddled with like older defenders ,maybe thats why some are not keen ???
