Help! I have a 60 plate 2.4 Puma 90. In the past year I have replaced injectors, EGR, turbo, fuel pump solenoid and fuel rail valve. It is driving like a dream and giving much improved fuel consumption but ........ It is failing it's MOT with a reading of between 2.00 and 2.25l/m. The exhaust is 'sooty' and when the MOT man revved the engine up for the test there was a small puff of black smoke. I have had a look at the intercooler hoses but can't see any splits. Any bright ideas?

Many thanks for that. Between the first test and second retest I ran through 400ml of Forte injector cleaner and 400ml Forte diesel cleaner. The reading went from 2.03 to 2.25l/m. I put a new air filter in two months ago when I serviced it. I will try the sensors. Before I replaced all the parts listed, the engine light would come on occasionally, usually when accelerating onto a motorway. The fault was with the MAF sensor and disappeared for a while after clearing the fault code. I had forgotten about that so you could be onto something there. Many thanks again.

That was the limit for diesels with turbos pre 1 July 2008. After that the limit reduced to 1.5 (sadly).

I'm really surprised at this. Mine passes with a straight through exhaust, decat, EGR blank and remap. 2007 though so different regs by the look of it. > 110 XS Double Cab

But the DPF was only introduced on Defenders in 2012 with the introduction of the 2.2. Try to get the so called plate value, cause in its absence, the limit goes to 1.5 fior all except the earliest 2.4. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

I would replace the MAF in that case.
If you use the search function on here you should find a thread of mine regarding the MAF & MAP part numbers and suppliers. It's not an overly expensive part if it is actual OEM, I wouldn't recommend LR Genuine due to price as it's the same part. The parts I posted about was actually for 2.4's like mine so it's your lucky day. Assuming it is the culprit of course, but MAF's are critical to performance. I replaced the MAP on mine as well at the time. Massive difference in price between actual parts from the manufacturer to LR Gen. something like £170 more for LR items and it is the same part. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R 🇬🇧🏴🏴🏴🇮🇪🇺🇸⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰💪 |

Jobs for tomorrow. Check the plate and have a look at the MAF sensor. Many thanks for all your help guys.

I'll probably get shot down here but if you are using supermarket fuel try running a couple of tankful's of Shell or BP super diesel (whatever it's actually called).
Has been known to make a difference. |

It's a point. When I took it back for the retest having run through Forte diesel and injector cleaner, I filled up with some top grade shell diesel. Sadly the emission value increased from 2.03 to 2.25l/m. Felt deflated.

The hotter the engine, the better combustion ... if the system is clean... Short distance trips are the worst thing for Diesel engines with EGR because the dirt from cold runs can never quit the system. Perhaps high quality diesel performs a bit better than supermarket fuel if the engine's cold.Hope dies last. So, benefit from a trip on the motorway in order to get the sooth out of the system. Clean EGR by hand if too much dirt. Warm up your engine for 20...30 min just before MOT starts |

This is no surprise : EGR is for NOx reduction. However, EGR rises CO, HC and sooth for which you need a the cat and the DPF. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exhaust_gas_recirculation You're gonna pass any MOT as long as the system isn't checked visually and NOx cannot be tested by their system as a dirty old coward The day NOx is tested you'll find yourself in the other category Last edited by Julie on 30th Sep 2020 10:01pm. For the retest I took it for a spin round the M25 then straight into the MOT garage where the man was waiting to do the test. He appeared to be on my side and was happy to let me stand by and watch. As I said before the reading worsened from 2.03 to 2.25l/m. What you say about hot engines does remind me of another issue. She runs like a dream with 91k on the clock but was a little bit wobbly (a couple of minor stutters at low speed) on two days when the temperature was in the 90's. I thought that strange because, as you rightly say, diesels run better when hot.
