The fine finish raptor looks good. Haven't ever seen up close and been able to compare with the "normal" finish.
Is fine finish a specific type of raptor then or is it just done based on gun and pressure and feed rate? Got quite a few bits that need doing in a similar finish but black. |

Hi, thanks.
It’s just the standard Raptor but instead of using the Raptor gun (or Schultz gun) I use a gravity feed normal spray gun with 1.8mm tip @50psi. The ratio I use for the tintable raptor is 3:1 (raptor:hardner) + 10% colour tint + 10% thinners, this gave quite a flat finish on the first coat so on the second coat I dropped to 5% thinners which gave the finish in the picture. With black Raptor it would just be 3:1 + upto 10% thinners. Hope this helps 1997 Ex-MOD 110, Pop Top Camper, build thread https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic72352.html 2014 Discovery 4 SE Tech Instagram @the110camper |

Those wheels look great I need to paint some wheels and have considered Raptor but using a Schultz gun would give a rougher finish than i want, now i've seen the finish you've achieved that's a decision made.

What a great thread!
I noticed you haven't used the washers circled here: Click image to enlarge When bolting the swivels to the axle casing, is there a reason for this? I am led to believe they are hardened, presumably to spread the load over the softer (relatively) swivel ball. I could be wrong though. Thanks
Whirly90 I’m not keen/not the look I’m after on the full Raptor finish with a Schultz gun either. This is a good compromise I think, took a few trials to get the mixture right but happy with it now! Shroppy, good eye! These are something I still need to sort out, I’ll be removing them and fitting genuine LR bolts and washers I’ve got now. The bolts were ordered from Bearmach and while the originals have 14mm heads these bolts are 17mm head which give a larger footprint on the swivel and are easier to tighten with a larger spanner but I’d rather have the original bolts fitted I think. 1997 Ex-MOD 110, Pop Top Camper, build thread https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic72352.html 2014 Discovery 4 SE Tech Instagram @the110camper |

Gearbox and transfer box cleaned up, painted and fitted.
Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Now on with plumbing the engine up and painting the last few bits black and then onto the bodywork. Also got a nice road trip on Sunday to pick up the Alu-Cab Icarus roof and ShadowAwn, just got to get the body built to put it on! 1997 Ex-MOD 110, Pop Top Camper, build thread https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic72352.html 2014 Discovery 4 SE Tech Instagram @the110camper |

Thank you. Can’t wait to get the roof on but lots to do first!
As an aside...it’s not normal practice to collect the roof and fit it yourself, they really do prefer to only having them fitted by an ‘approved’ fitter, mainly due to warranty purposes. Got the fuel bled through and the engine started last night, raises moral slightly!! did fitting the alucab roof save you much on cost? Do they still take your old roof in exchange?

Well, the cost of the roof is the same, fixed price non negotiable. Cost of fitting is on top of that of which I don’t know how much it would be, never asked.
They don’t take your old roof, I’ll keep mine in storage in case I ever want to convert it back or put the Alu-cab on to a different Defender. 1997 Ex-MOD 110, Pop Top Camper, build thread https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic72352.html 2014 Discovery 4 SE Tech Instagram @the110camper |
