Whilst dredging the ditch at back of my house I got bogged down. In my haste to get it done I asked the wife to pull me out. Which resorted in a bent bumper.

Has the bumper actually ripped off the lower mounting on the offside chassis leg?
What were you pulling with, and did you snatch? |

Yes it ripped on bottom bracket. We’re the tapped plate is.
Used a kinetic recovery strap and did snatch yeah. Like I say, my own fault for doing it so hastily |

I am sure that a salutary lesson about forces generated during recovery has been learned. At least that failure mode didn't result in a projectile through the rear of the Disco.
I've never actually seen a winch bumper fail in that way before. It's actually quite a sensible progressive failure mechanism, and I wonder if that is by design or just luck. Is/was there any bracing from the bottom of the winch tray back to the chassis? I presume not. |

I've always wondered about 'heavy duty' bumpers with recovery points that just rely on the end of chassis brackets

Now, yes there should be. But I never fit it mostly because it wasn’t compatible with the steering guard. However since this has happened I am going to fit them and modify them accordingly. It will give a 6 bolt connection for bumper to chassis as opposed to just 4 |

Aha, and now you know why they are supplied!
The only positive thing to take away is that there are so many ways that this could have been far, far, worse. As it is the only thing that took a hit is your wallet! |
