2.2 fuel filter change procedure
Thought I’d put up a quick post on this subject because I couldn’t really find any info previously. The workshop manual isn’t much help either, information is vague suggesting you need to complete the low pressure fuel system bleed procedure after a filter change. Given the 2.2’s in-tank pump this felt unnecessary but I wasn’t sure! I also didn’t want to pre-fill the filter with diesel given the potential for injector damage.

A thread on the Australian LR forum gave me confidence I’d be OK without the fuel priming pump, so I cracked on.

I can confirm the 2.2 puma does not need the hand fuel priming pump connecting to replace the fuel filter, even when it’s attached empty. The only real thing to remember before starting for the first time is to turn the key to the accessory position to prime the fuel system and that the pump only runs for 10s at a time so you’ll need to turn the ign to acc, wait 10s while the pump runs, then key off and back to acc. I did that 10 times, but I couldn’t hear fuel circulating after the 7’th cycle.

I realise this isn’t new information for a lot of people, but it might help someone like me who couldn't find info! 2014 Keswick Utility 2.2

If you pre-fill the filter before fitting too you can save the priming business, just start as normal and leave running for 5 minutes! 2011 Defender DCPU 2.2 - https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic30623.html

I prefill the new filter then start/run engine at about 3000rpm for one minute. Never had any problem.

Hello UtilityTruck,
Did it start up without any problem?
Did you increase the RPMs on start?

I don't like the idea of pre fuelling fuel filters just in case debris gets.

Thanks

Mark

Did my 2.4 a couple of weeks ago and pre-filled the filter with a fuel treatment / additive. Just fired it up and left it running for 5 Mins.

Isn't there an in built purge cycle like the Td5's have? (ign on, pump the throttle pedal 5 or so times and it'll run the pump constantly for a minute or 3)

Yes started as normal, no hesitation. No need to raise the revs at all.

The in-tank pump and return style fuel system mean all the air is purged back into the tank. Thumbs Up 2014 Keswick Utility 2.2

Replaced my filter this morning and bleed as described, no problem.
Started up first time.

Much better then risking un filtered fuel getting in the HP pump while priming the filter.

Thanks UT!

For the avoidance of doubt, exactly which procedure did you use? There are a few procedures described in the topic.

hi,
I did want to purge the diesel filtre ...
Nothing was going out, so I decide to turn the key for 2 or 3 secondes ...
The key out, the cycle of pumping was going to the end.

My surprise was to see that with one cycle there was 0.6 litre in the container !

So I think that it is not neccessary to make 10 cycle, I will try with 3 next time I change the filtre

Interesting to hear Philippe, I was simply going on the sound, which changed on the 7th cycle so really I have no idea how many cycles were required to actually purge the filter- I played it safe I suppose! 2014 Keswick Utility 2.2
