Just got round to doing the air box modification, as per the thread below.
Well worth doing it if you haven't already. I noticed an instantly smoother and responsive engine. Not quite a remap like change, but a much better engine for sure. https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic25864.html Why JLR thought it was a good idea to put that lump of plastic trash impeller in the pipework is beyond me. Cheers Dobbs |

That I can understand. Looking at the 'bits' left over, I can see the impeller 'could' spin the wet air enough to fling the water to the sides of the tube in the bottom of the box. There's a long lip on the end of the tube, under which is the drain. So aerodynamically it's a bit of a spin cycle for the incomig wet air. But I reckon that's only designed to "help" (as the lawyers will say) to stop the filter getting wet. |

I did mine. Youโve got to bear in mind the impeller could get jammed up with debris too. A garage had one in the other day with the impeller jammed up with leaves, which significantly reduced performance as you can imagine.
If they had to put one in they could have at least increased the diameter of the inlet to reduce the constriction but still have it in place. Mines been done about 5 years now, never had a problem at all. I do prefer to change the filter annually though ideally. Last edited by custom90 on 18th May 2019 11:32am. Did mine a while ago as well. Bit of a fiddle but a noticeable difference for sure.

Did mine years ago, coupled with a 4 inch intake pipe and a silicone airbox to turbo pipe the difference is massive! 2011 Defender DCPU 2.2 - https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic30623.html

Worth doing and definitely feels an improvement as opposed to expensive intercooler and exhaust mods/upgrades which IME give no usable gains. However don't expect miracles, as Ian says in that thread:
I think there are now replacement parts available for those who don't want to do the butchering themselves or need to return to standard in case of warranty work. |

The trouble is you've got to be careful you don't go so far as you go though the airbox structure its self.
Definitely a go to take time and patience over and if it is done before tuning as mine was it is well worth mentioning any mods you have so it can be taken into account pre tune.

In respect to the replacement parts v home made kits. I've found a puma kit by ozzy Nugget stuff one and there is also a Naka one but it seems is only for a TD4.
There was reference from Pete@BAS that they were thinking of making one but nothing on his website. ANy other kits out there that anyone knows of? . Nugget one seems fine but expensive. Has BAS made any progress on this yet? Pete? https://www.firstfour.co.uk/defender-puma-sealed-air-system.html |

Fitted Alive boost pipes this morning and whilst exposed thought Iโd have a look at this airbox mod. Took about 45 minutes. Difference: a noticeable difference in 1st and 2nd seems slightly less holding back and more linear is the best way to explain.
Multi tool was my weapon of choice. Propellor/impeller tapped straight out from the inside. Not done the intake pipe yet, Iโll wait and see. Good call |

Done mine today, I was sceptical but an immediate difference! Worth the 30mins to do it.
I used a hot knife, I have a gas soldering iron which came with a few attachments, hot knife was one of them and it worked a treat best ยฃ15 I spent in Maplins! After fitting today, I can absolutely confirm that upgrading to the nugget air intake kit is a fantastic upgrade . Also removed the impeller. It just baffles me as to why a less restricted hose was not put on by Land Rover .
Instant improvement in response from the throttle and just a far smoother ride in every gear and up through the Rev range . Frankly I think itโs made and equal difference to the BAS remap . https://www.instagram.com/hustynminepark/ |
