Is that all that is involved with the modification? Removing the propeller?

I'm curious as to whether a more unrestricted air flow will actually benefit anything?
I understand the logic on an "analogue" engine but ours are now fully "digital". There's a number of air flow sensors and the standard ecu must have other set parameters including wheel speed and the like, so I just wonder if it just hits another limit, either physical or software related within the overall system? |

Improving the induction system makes a massive difference to the performance and smooth running of the engine.

When I took the diffuser out of mine there was an instant noticeable difference to how smooth the engine ran. It revved more freely and sounded much sweeter at idle.

I agree with the statement Blackwolf mentioned - This is what happened with mine in a real world scenario.
Removing the rain separator isn't the only thing it's the inlet to cut out in the base of the air box. You do have to be careful if you do, I used a hot knife if I remember rightly. I used to have a picture of inside the air box but I don't have it any more. Basically as you look in the air box you'll see at the bottom the large inlet hole. You need to remove this round plastic piece inside the air box which then leads out of the air box to the left. Leaving the outer structure of the air box body only. This allows the air to come in from the left and up with less restriction rather than being in that restrictive piece in the bottom of the air box. It is definitely worth doing. I drove it today to the near town and back. I don't see a wow effect, but the engine performs better in low rpms. I think the "1st-2nd gear struggle" is somehow cured now and for me this is a big Defender 110 SW MY2011 2.4tdci decat, no EGR

Did mine yesterday and added the Nugget RAI adapter kit now I have some time on my hands. Mine already has a remap but it seems to pull a lot smoother below 2000 revs and just feels better somehow. Well worth it.

I did the airbox mod today and was very pleasantly surprised at the result. It is actually now very pleasant to drive, All the horrible shunting/bunny hopping has gone, and the light throttle 1-2000rpm is useable for slow speed driving.
I do understand the downside of removing the water seperator, but with a Mantec RAI and a Nugget sealed air duct on the way I think I have water ingress covered. And yes, I do consider the snorkel to be an essential piece of kit (one of our best local trails has 26 river crossings!). I'ts not there to turn it into a submarine, but that one day when you are crossing that river at a sensible depth and the wheel drops into a hole you didn't see, then it will save you. |

Great mod and An instant difference , I fitted the Nugget Air Filter housing last week and again thereโs a noticeable change in performance , with throttle response and turbo . The engine sound is noticeably different as well .
It was a lot of money and I had my doubts but am really pleased . If you do both in one go , the difference would be hugely noticeable https://www.instagram.com/hustynminepark/ |
