I wonder who mounted the "legal challenge" and why?

I'm very grateful to you apt100 - we have around 20 vermin guns on our shoot and like Co1 heard nothing from BASC, CA, GWCT - I was even with the local NGO rep on Friday for a couple of hours and not a mention!

Seems to have flown entirely under everyone's radar, and I bet none of the local farmers have seen it!

Well I have voiced my opinion regarding the appallingly short notice to NE via their complaints portal here

https://www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/4LIRL/

I have a faint hope that NE will issue GL's [General Licences] that are going to be less likely to receive future legal challenges. Some of the outrage on FB has shown that some show a marked lack of knowledge regarding the current what, until today, were the current GL's. Steve.

Interesting to note Tony Juniper as the new chair of natural England...

Anthony Juniper CBE is a British campaigner, writer, sustainability advisor and environmentalist who served as Executive Director of Friends of the Earth, England, Wales and Northern Ireland. He was Vice Chair of Friends of the Earth International from 2000–2008. Source: Wikipedia Steve.

Chris Packham & two others have launched a "Not for Profit" Company called Wild Justice.
They raised £36K ( wish) by crowd funding to put forward a legal challenge.
This has been known about within the shooting world for at least a couple of weeks.

Natural England has pulled the General Licences pending a judicial review etc etec.
The shooting world/pest controllers/farmers etc are not happy. The control of pest species at this time of year is paramount.

Many shooters are blaming BASC/CA etc for not informing them/doing anything etc.
This is MOST unfair.
These organisations fully understand the severity of the attack and are ,as we speak, preparing to meet with Natural England.
At the moment , I strongly suggest , that you obey the withdrawal of the GL , continue to support BASC et al & write to your MP.
There is a rumour about that Packham is targeting fox shooting next.
I would also encourage you to sign one of the petitions calling upon the BBC to drop Packahm

Agree with all that except the statement regarding the BBC sacking Packham. Yes in an ideal world pressure would see him get the boot but cast your mind back not that long ago and remind yourself of this:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-37455340

Which contains the following statement

In its report, published on Friday, the BBC Trust said Packham was a freelancer and therefore not a BBC employee, adding he was not "associated with news or public policy-related output".

This fact has been regurgitated by the man himself as recently as a couple of days ago as a result of his address to the climate protesters in London when he was questioned about his position within the BBC and how his views square with their charter commitments regarding impartiality.

Basically we are fed the line that the guy is engaged by the BBC on a freelance basis and therefore falls outside some of the restrictions imposed on those employed directly by the Corporation.

Remember people like Robin Page no longer fit into the way the Corporation likes to portray country matters, they prefer instead to engage people like Mr Packham who pander to the Disney influenced view of wildlife held by so many of the public.

I have written to my MP, lodged a complaint with NE regarding the short notice etc and suggest others who share the incredulity over the present situation do likewise. Steve.

Looks like Chris Packham isn’t having too good a time at the moment. Following the legal challenge he and his team instigated someone has left a load of dead crows hanging outside his home

Interesting piece in the Telegraph.

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/goodlife/11872...yside.html

I've always liked Robin Page who used to present "One Man And His Dog" until his tell it like it is views made him somewhat unpopular with the BBC. Steve.

I still maintain my stance ; Chris Packham has no concept of conservation nor the role that shooting plays in it.
He is very dangerous , he enjoys the protection of the BBC when he shouldn't & he insults those who live & work in the countryside with his ill conceived rhetoric.
He needs stopping & the way to do it is to get the BBC to face up to the situation & deny him the oxygen of exposure.

Seems some of the press are supportive of the shooting viewpoint, as you say. Letters in papers today are echoing concerns the impact this ban will have on songbird and rare species populations (esp. ground nesters) and the damage to farming (both on crop impacts and to young livestock). Farmers themselves are saying the same.

Unfortunately, there are loud voices in the animal activists brigade and we, as shooters, would rather keep our heads down it seems. Public opinion may not favour us unless the benefits of shooting are emphasised by influential people.

An especially poorly-timed attack though as it's right at the start of the nesting season for most birds now. I hope he's shot himself in the foot with this, I really do (no pun intended).
