Russia 2011 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 X-Tech LE Orkney Grey
Gents,

I have been hearing some knocking sounds in the gearbox area and pretty sure that these are clutch springs. Sad news since the mileage is just 32k… Anyway what are the best options for the replacements? Sachs? Valeo?

In our country Defender owners prefer Ford Transit 2006+ clutch kits which seem to be pretty reliable. Any feedbacks on this?

The vehicle is Def 2.4 Puma.

Thanks!

Knocking sounds at all temperatures? They tend to knock when the whole system is hot (ie. highway speed).
As far as I understand the Transit type clutches will result in rattling on the input shaft. Some claim no noise at all. Puma 110" SW

I haven't noticed actually but it knocks mainly after driving for some time. So yes, when the system is hot, I suppose.

For me reliability of the clutch would be the key thing. Any noise is find since it'd a Defender… Smile

Just replaced mine, original one. Old one did 78k miles with some heavy towing. Friction material still ok but springs had some play. Guess an other 10k more and I could have been in troubles. m

Daily driver, heavy towing, 180k from 2011, still first clutch, no complaints, working fine. Never forget: cars have owner, Landrover have field service personnel.

had mine done today 95000 km. LOF standard kit plus output shaft. Not that the old one had broken but having read the many posts on this subject I thought borrowed time etc..
The indy who did the job said a couple of springs on the old clutch were near to going 'ping'. Of more concern the output shaft splines were fairly worn with not a drop of factory grease and it was an absolute pig to extract.
The gear change is quite a bit tighter and lighter with a quick, sharp biting point which I quite like. A bit like a family hatch actually. Its 8 years old so wondering what else is on the verge of failure. I intend to keep it so it will end up like trigger's brush probably

Changed mine at 70K miles on 2012 model with LuK clutch. Friction pad still OK for many thousands of miles but springs were shot (rattling around and on the verge of falling out). Replaced output shaft at same time with standard LR part - was in a sorry state with high likelihood of imminent failure.
Drive was transformed - all clunks/bangs on taking up drive eliminated.

Frustrating and expensive having to replace two badly designed/assembled components before the end of their expected lifetime 2012 110 XS SW Orkney Grey
