4, vehicle milage at first shaft failure - 38500 (technically it did not fail, but was replaced as showing signs of wear)

At my last service the garage reported that there were signs of rust coming from the output shaft - ergo, it was starting to fail. As I am planning a long trip later this year, I decided to bite the bullet and get it replaced, along with the clutch. The indy that I use automatically fit the Ashcroft modified shaft - which looks a whole lot better than the original. I did see the original that was removed, and it was clearly showing signs of wear - but how much longer might it have lasted - who knows! At least I have piece of mind now. Euro-Leafing to infinity and beyond.....

Hi all,
That's resurrected the thread! If you've not seen the analysis, it's on page 5 of the thread, the important bits below.
A vehicle that has failed will do the same again, at similar milage, on a standard shaft.
Tom, sorry to see yours has gone at 16k and 13k intervals, but good to see you're now going Ashcroft.

A good Defender, where everything lines up just right, can go on for very high miles, 200k+, with the original.

I'll get round to updating the results one day, but looking at these latest figures they fall in line with what we know so far.

Repeated failures
We only have figures for 4 vehicles with repeated failure, but they all follow the same pattern.
If a standard shaft is fitted they seem to fail again at similar miles.

Case 1, 25,000 and again at 57,000
Case 2, 23,000 and again at 56,000
Case 3, 13,000 again at 25,000 and again at 41,000
Case 4, 25,000 again at 60,000 and again at 90,000

Case5, 30.000 , 50.000 and 70.000


Other transmission issues
Many reported failures also noted problems with clutch, main gearbox or transfer box.
Problems elsewhere seem to affect how long the shaft will last.

Failure rate by year
While at first glance the 2.2 seems to be worse than the 2.4, it gradually gets worse from 2007 to 2010 year.
The next few years are fairly consistent up to 2012. After that I suspect the vehicles are too new to have reached the miles when the problem occurs.
Early failures are reported for 2013 & 2015, so it doesn't look like there is much change.

Ashcroft shafts
I was disappointed with the level of info coming back on these, the limited info we got proves nothing.

Five Ashcroft shafts reported to be still running at 5.000 , 4.000 , 6.000 , 14,000 and 7.000 miles.

While there's no proof from our survey that they do last longer, surely they can't be worse than the standard part.
In the hope they do last longer I will be fitting one when the time comes.

I hope this survey has helped with understanding the extent of the problem.

Clutch replaced, asked mechanic to check the shaft when gear box out, got a call to say pile of red dust and a very worn shaft, no sign of any grease being used!!

3, Was, until this weekend - changed as precaution while doing clutch - just aswell did, see next:
4, 48000 on the clock. Shaft splines were very worn and covered in red dust. I’ve dodged a bullet...wasn’t lasting much longer.
5, after lots of research decided on Ashcroft. Seems a logical solution as oil is always going to be better than grease. Can’t find any examples of them failing.

Second hand so not 100% sure if original but no mention of change when purchased from original owner who gave me full history and documented works. Also Just before purchasing it had ust had a new clutch fitted so hoping they greased the shaft....

Do you get any signs of failure or does it just let go?

4, vehicle milage at first shaft failure, or current milage on the original shaft if still running. 70,000 not catastrophic, but increasingly noisy with lots of driveline clunking. Replaced at same time as clutch (which was rattling like a good un) and the shaft was in a bad way

5, Has an Ashcroft modified part has been fitted? (Y/N) N Do much less mileage these days, so if I get another 70K miles out of the replacement it will do for me
