Hi all
I replaced the bushes in the radius arms today (well one side anyway) , actually a much easier job than I anticipated ! However can I get the radius arms back on ? Can I hell! Any tips much appreciated as I can’t Line up the pivet bolts with the holes . I have one side jacked up with axle stand under chassis and jack under axle to bear the weight . Do I need to also jack the other side so the axle is floating ? Thanks in advance |

I’ve tried that and although I can get a pivot bolt hole on one side to line up I can’t get the bolt all the way through , it’s way off on the other side . I’m thinking that maybe both wheels need to come off ? My only reservation then is that the axle will be hanging even lower and even further round . I did it a few years ago on an old defender and they slapped straight back on so not sure what I’m doing wrong this time |

The axle has just rotated about its diameter and the other side has moved slightly. I always do it with chassis on axle stands, trolley Jack under diff nose, both wheels off, large pry bar, lump hammer and parallel punch to line holes. Cheers

I allways the weels on and just put a jack under the front bumpe to take some weight. It still rests on the springs. That way everything is lined up as normal. If needed I use a steel bar to force it a little to get it lined up. Roel

Thanks all I managed to get them both done this morning. I thought the bush removal and replacement was going to be the hard part but that was relatively straightforward!
I ended up placing a small bottle jack from the outrigger to the axle in order to push the axle far enough away to get the pivot bolts in . Also a trolley jack underneath to push the radius arm into its brackets . I will confess that I also used a hammer to tap them all through without any ill effects ! The second arm took relatively no time , number one was a learning curve . Replaced track rod and ball joints with HD greaseable whilst I had it all apart. All made a huge difference, still pulling to the left like a though ! |

I’m slowly eliminating everything . Tracking has been checked twice and is apparently spot on, air pressure is good , changed brake pads and one seized calliper , swivel preload is good , bearings seem fine It has had a new to me axle and steering box fitted relatively recently so I’m suspecting one of those to be at fault to be honest . Should the power steering box be centralised in some way before the drop arm is fitted ? There’s a ton of backlash in the front diff so I’m going to swap that over as I have a spare |

The steering box should be centralised prior to the drop arm being fitted, have seen people fail to do this and it results in different turns left and right, also seen the wrong drop arm fitted ie a l/h one on a r/h/d wagon, that gives interesting faults.
Assume the tracking was done post all other work. Other things could be a bent tie rod, or as another thread on here suggested some after market steering dampers can cause this. It’s more of a constant pull to the left , it doesn’t feel like anything’s jamming . It is worth noting that the ride feels more choppy on the left than the right , pot holes etc feel harsher. It’s also stiffer to steer under acceleration.
I have Bilstein B6 shocks fitted with standard Bearmach springs front and back but they were there before the problem . Alignment was done after axle swap but was spot on ! My gut tells me it’s the steering box or the differential both irritatingly large jobs |

Swap front tyres over, left to right, see if it pulls them, if so which way! 'Volvo XC 70, taking the rough with the smooth’

I haven’t tried, that as to be honest I cant see why that would suddenly be a cause of pulling left , unless they were under inflated ! But I will otherwise I’ll look like an utter muppet if that is the cause , having changed axles and steering boxes !!
I have had a thought ... When the axle was replaced by our local 'Land rover Specialist' the steering was atrocious , floaty and unpredictable . I had a look underneath and noticed that the left front spring wasn't located in the top mount , it was half in half out and as a result shaped like a banana . I popped it back in and haven't thought about it again . It was like this for maybe 3-4 days , could this have warped the spring causing this pulling to the left or is that highly unlikely ? |

I swapped the front wheels over today and it’s now pulling even more to the left along with steering wheel also being off centre (also to the left ) !
I’ll be swapping them back ! |
