Number of cylinders has nothing to do with a rev counter that takes a feed from the alternator.
Some rev counters for petrol engines take a pulse from the ignition and so are switchable for 4 or 8 cylinders. |

Hi. I'm currently considering installing one in my 300Tdi, how would you describe the build quality of this product? |

I'm happy with it - I bought it because it was sort of close in style to the original defender gauges,
Pros - cheap , looks ok, postage was reasonably quick, it came with instructions. It works fine with no issues, seems of half decent quality Cons - it was made in china so for 20 quid - so if it fails in a few years I'll just swap it for the same again. - 5 minute job |

To bring up an oldish thread...
I’ve used the same gauge as you ... ordered it when I saw this thread ages ago. Finally got round to acting on it Wired it all in, took alt off to add the terminal, definitely the one you circled. Standard same looking TD5 alt as you When I turn ignition on it powers up. Flicks right to left. Then just sits and 0 and does nothing. No amount of twiddling with the dial on the back does anything. Illumination functions correctly when I go for the lights so I’m certain it’s wired correct. I gave up and went in for lunch and cider! I might go back out and multimeter the dash feed I took for W, I’m assuming it should read 12v but may be erratic due to pulsing? Insta: @thebenjordan4x4 |

Right, I got this.
Metered it and sweet nothing. Had a head scratch and then realised I had totally missed plugging the multi plug into the back of the alt!!! Weird, no 'alt dead' illumination on the dash!? Had a fiddle about and just about managed to get a hand to the plug, and magically of course it worked... 6000rpm at idle. Got the Nanocom out and metered it and twiddled the dial on the back, and yes totally accurate now and sorted, £20 and a bit of time. ![]() Click image to enlarge Insta: @thebenjordan4x4 |

You're unlikely to get an alternator dead signal because with the plug un-plugged there's no path to ground to activate the light. Ed

As I have some spare time, and the truck is on axle stands amid some fairly major works, I ordered one at last! It'll probably arrive just in time for me to go back to working 8 days a week...

Bit of a thread revival, but I've just done this job on my td5 and it's working perfectly, so thanks for everyone's contributions!
It's definitely possible to do it while the alternator is still on the car, but it is extremely awkward! 1990 Defender 110 200TDI Camper - now converted to Td5 power |

Just fired up the 110 for the first time in a week, battery light stayed on, rev counter at 0, and alternator smoking hot...
I did clean the alternator down with brake cleaner before I started the rev counter job last week as it was really oily. It worked fine on the drive afterwards, but seems it is now dead. Looks like I've killed the alternator - little warning for anyone doing this job to not be too liberal with the brake cleaner when doing this job! 1990 Defender 110 200TDI Camper - now converted to Td5 power |

I finally managed to get mine done a few weeks back, needed a but of calibrating against my nanocom, but works great!
Makes the other dials look a bit dingy by comparison though... |
