England 2007 Defender 90 Puma 2.4 HT Cairns Blue
200Tdi Starting Procedure
So we bought our 200Tdi 90 in June 2017 and if you just as much as touched the key it lept into life. We ran it around for two weeks before starting a total rebuild of the vehicle. We left the engine well alone as it was running so well.

During the summer this year the engine went back in and was started up 13 months after being switched off. It started second touch of the key and continued like before until the colder weather came.

The rebuild continues and it's not yet been back up to proper normal operating temperature.

Now if its left for a week or so, its tough to start, it always does, but its not like before. Once its been running, it's seems to be back to normal that day.

It must be the cold ambeant temperature, what is the correct way to start a 200Tdi in the cold please?

Turn the key to position 1 and listen for the click of the glow plug relay switching off before starting. Darren

I just jump in and turn the key, no matter how cold it is I've never needed to wait fires straight away

Mine very often sits for weeks without being started it has to be said Sad

Technically you should start it when the glow plug light goes out, not when the relay clicks. It is designed to apply some post-start heating which is why the light goes out before the relay clicks.

However I would bet that the OP’s issue is not related to the glow plugs, more likely the fuel draining back from the injectors when left for a period. Check the leak-off lines, these are prone to either loosening off or the pipe degrading, both of which will cause air to get in and result in poor starting after being sat for a while.

Where are these, and what do they look like? I thought it was fuel related.

My old 200tdi didn't have a glow plug light. I assumed they were all the same but mine's the only one of that particular model that I've driven. Darren

Likewise. Mine did 1500 miles last year. It has never not started on the first turn of the key. I never wait for the glow plug, just straight to start. 1988 110 200TDi Hard Top

The leak off lines are the small diameter fuel pipes that run from each injector back down to the fuel injection pump. Not the metal hard lines but the rubber/plastic ones.

How does your 200 suffer from poor starting, you dont say, eg is it excessive cranking, misfiring initially on start up, lots of white smoke on startup? Colder weather does have an impact.

Was the timing belt changed recently when the engine was out?

As well as trying the other suggestions it might be worth getting the injector pump static timing checked properly by someone who knows about Land Rovers, this needs to be set correctly with a micrometer dial guage.

Good point OJ

It cranks for sometime with no fiiring, does that twice and then on the 3rd go it fires a bit then starts and runs nicely and restarts with ease .

No white smoke at all, bit of black when it finally gets going.

Long story but timming belt was replaced short time before the rebuild started, so apart from a good clean, the engine was left well alone. Before reinstallation it had been left idle for 13 months, it fired straight into life with no bleeding or any tinkering, we just connected it all back up and bang it started. But that was in the summer.
