This is quite a depressing read, the Defender is well and truly on it's last legs it seems.

Is this the smallest engine ever to be fitted to a Defender, after the 2.25 petrols way back when?

April 1958 in the 109's only at first. A very quiet, robust but sweet little motor that starts on one turn, rain or shine every morning - for me! Thumbs Up

A total of roughly 200,000 Land Rover examples had been built by 1958, 70% of them going abroad to 150 different countries with several countries even building Land Rovers locally from CKD kits. Despite the introduction of several new rivals in the 1950's and 60's, the Land Rover still reigned supreme and even replaced the Austin Champ as the British Army's favourite vehicle Thumbs Up It still reigns supreme in my opinion Wink

Speaking with the dealer principle today, and according to the 2012 new model line up- dealer briefing document , the word is as follows.....130 still available in crew cab and cab chassis form only. No SV quadtech bodies or tippers available due to EU 'Mass & Dimension rules'. There is absolutley no mention of an engine change top the Defender for 2012, or deletion of any other models, although it states MY12 will be available for dealer del in Sept after the August break.

Ordered a new 90 today myself, and was told the exact same thing by my dealership. Ive got on the order form a 'MY11 2.4tdci' and have told them that if it arrives with a 2.2 engine in it they can keep it and refund me the deposit Thumbs Up

Series 1s started off with 1.6 litre petrols, then went up to 2 litres in about 1951 I think. 2011 110 USW
1973 Series III 1-Ton
1972 Series III 1-Ton Cherrypicker
1969 IIA 1-Ton
1966 IIA 88"

just reading some of the above posts about dealers not taking any more orders for the 2.4 is slightly worrying.

Mine was ordered by the dealer at around 3.00 yesterday afternoon and they said August build/Sept delivery but I'd better phone on Monday just to make sure Confused

I wonder if the 2.2L will have the bonnet bulge? The South African market had a series 3 with a ADE 236 Diesel engine (3.9L) that pulled like a steam train. Was a joy to drive as the Land cruiser with it's 4.1L Puma 110 SW

There are a few in the system. Dealers have a limited (or zero) number of 2.4 Defenders they can order - my local has only one CSW left then has to wait for the 2.2. They are not at all impressed with what they have heard about it so far. John

2.2 specifications
If someone can tell me how I can post an image (because I'm stupid), I can put up a detailed official engine comparison 2.4 v 2.2.
In the meantime (according to the document)
Identical power and torque output
Identical emissions
Identical acceleration times
2.2 has lower compression ratio: 15.5 v 17.5
2.2 has higher top speed: 90 mph v 82 mph.
How the physics works on that I don't know.

Get a gmail account, which will allow you to upload pics to PicasaWeb (even by SMS). Then copy+paste the image URL in your post using the IMG button Thumbs Up --

Guess the speed limiter has been changed to 90mph, but I'd still prefer the bigger engine as the same output from a smaller engine must cause extra stress somewhere!
