Are you saying that LR has gone BACK to cut and shut? In the early days, when 130s (or 127s as they were then) were built by SVO, they took 110s off the line and did this, but when the 130 got its own line the chassis were purpose-built to the right wheelbase (the early ones still usually say 110 WB on the V5). I know that there have been some incidents recently of 130 cherry-pickers breaking in half, but I was under the impression that even these were on proper 127" wheelbase chassis (not extended). Is it possible that what you were looking at was a strengthening plate or gusset applied to the chassis? I would be shocked to find a new 130 on a cut and shut chassis, but I wouldn't be surprised at all to find that the chassis were being strengthened. |

I think it is common knowledge now Tim. Chatting to my sales guy today and said they only have the option for one 2.4 Defender left then they will get no more until the 2012 model years start coming through. John http://www.hampshire4x4response.co.uk 2011 Tdci 110 CSW XS |

Speaking with the dealer principle today, and according to the 2012 new model line up- dealer briefing document , the word is as follows.....130 still available in crew cab and cab chassis form only. No SV quadtech bodies or tippers available due to EU 'Mass & Dimension rules'. There is absolutley no mention of an engine change top the Defender for 2012, or deletion of any other models, although it states MY12 will be available for dealer del in Sept after the August break.

I was planning to swap my Disco for a Defender 2 110 USW. Had planned to buy new in March/April 2012.
Would I be better buying a late 2.4, or waiting till the new 2.2 I wonder? The road tax is less of an issue, as it's commercial anyway... However better MPG is attractive, so long as it's not underpowered or less reliable. Just called my local dealer to see if there was a deal to be had on a 2.4, and he didn't even know about the possible change to 2.2 ! |

My local dealer told me they are finding they can't meet demand for the current 2.4 so oyu may not get much of a deal. John

Talked to my dealer today and he said books are closed for the 2.4 Puma. LR will from now on accept only orders for the 2.2 and the earliest of these to arrive would be mid December. Documents for the 2012 Defender are not finished yet, due to the fact they still discuss on a greater facelift including plastic bumpers ... aarggs, glad I get a 2011 model.

well thanks to CR who pointed out that the road tax here is going to be the same for both engines I am ordering a 2.4.
Anyone I know who has a DPF gets constant grief from them if mostly used for short journeys as the soot builds up. And by using 2 stroke oil from new the EGR in the 2.4 will be clean as a whistle from day one. Just one little detail to check out (thank you spudfan) and hopfully August build/september delivery....... |

200cc really make that much difference If its the same engine as the freelander then bring it on. It would be good if there was also another engine choice as well for those that tow heavy trailers everyday, but for 90% of us that just tow standard trailers and use the Land Rover for everyday stuff then why not the 2.2.

That would make more sense, although the mechanics thought it was an extension piece - hopefully they are wrong. One of them thought the capping's were still galvanised so they could well be wrong |

No, one more time - it is not the 2.2 Diesel engine built into Freelanders, these are DW12 engines from PSA, built originally for Peugeot 607, Citroen C5 etc. The Defender gets the new 2.2 engine from Ford Transit, which is said to be a modified ZSD422. Totally different beast. |

This is quite a depressing read, the Defender is well and truly on it's last legs it seems.
Is this the smallest engine ever to be fitted to a Defender, after the 2.25 petrols way back when? |
