Yes the clip was in place, but it wasn’t fully home!
I’ve found this on all of the ones I’ve replaced.

When putting them back together, I drive the shaft into the cup with a block of wood and a hammer, to get it seated all the way in. Thumbs Up 80" 80" 86" 88" 90"

Another output shaft gone, yesterday. Original output shaft replaced under warranty in 2015 (prior to my ownership), so this one has lasted 3yrs Shocked James

I do not have a full track of failures occurred and informed in this forum, but it seems the problem started on Pumas built after some certain date. Mine is a very early one and I´m wondering it will eventually fail. Excuse my spanglish. Puma 110" SW

From a non-scientific survey of the forum I did a year or two ago it seems that 2007-build failures are rare (mine is currently on 225,000 miles on the original shaft) and it has gone downhill from then. 2010-build seems to be a very bad time, with many failures.

Although this failure is a really annoying fault and it is shameful that Landrover built a vehicle with this fault, it continues to fascinate me how two notionally identical vehicles, bult at the same time, can be so different. One might last 250,000 miles and the next off the line might last 5,000 miles. There must be more to this than simply a lack of lube. Somewhere there is a major QC problem, whether it is materials spec or alignment, I couldn't say, but there must be more to this than lubrication.

BW can I through a spanner into the works / equation. It's about all I'm capable of doing with spanners Laughing ....

I had a fault with my transmission from day one. the trucks done 100k miles now. My first failed at approx. 25k, 2nd at about 50k - 60k and had a further one installed before failure at about 90k (all from memory).

when I safe fault with my transmission numerous LR dealerships drove my truck including a LR mobile tech guy and they all gave it a clean bill of health as have numerous other persons all familiar with LR's (defenders). any how turns out they my diff lock lever was poorly adjusted and not pushing the tab on the transfer box far enough over to the nearside. albeit the diff lock light never came on there has been numerous indicators to suggest the transmission was locking up and I also believe noise from the transmission.

now my thoughts are if so many people (both educated and experienced) thought it was 'ok' how many other trucks are out there that are 'ok' and could this lead to premature wear? I think it probably would, I'm not saying it's the sole cause but I strongly believe it's a contributing factor. Question

Off to Ian at IRB on Saturday to check mine out. On the first shaft at 52,000 miles and there is definitely a clonk if I'm a bit heavy-handed changing gear. In reality I just want to make sure it's not going to fail during our holiday later in the year towing the caravan.

Not an expert, but I dont think any clonk is related to such end of the output shaft. If flange splines are ok, I would blame a slacky central diff. Puma 110" SW

crawl underneath and check if the tab on the transfer box is getting pushed all the way across by the leakage or can you push it the last 1cm by hand?

Some say that the spline is going to receive more wear if the MT82 and the shaft are not exactly in one line.

Interesting detail: The part LR030054 has two equal splines but only one spline fails in any case.
The inner spline at the MT82 will never fail. It's always the "outer" spline connecting the shaft.

From my point of view corrosion seems to be relevant.
The "inner" spline is black and appears almost new (no wear).
The "outer" spline is completely corroded (rust is harder than steel, an accelerated wear is obvious).

Corrosion in the spline is a result from humidity / temperature changes.
The absence of grease could also explain an early wear.
