Rear diff oil leak
I've got a small leakage from the back diff.

I guess it's just the seal. To repair this do i only need the seal (FTC5258) or other parts? And if i'am replacing the seal is it wise to change some other components as well (like the bearing etc). a defender from 1984 pretending to be a puma with a touch of Range Rover

You need to check the flange for wear, torque wrench (100Nm I believe) and a good amount of loctite. IIRC you cannot change the bearing from this side. There are shims involved as well. Puma 110" SW

As MK stated You need to check the flange for wear, if its bad you will fell grove

not flange your working with but wear in the same place i.e. where seal runs

Thnx both.

Can I check for wear from the outside? Ie play in the flange? Or can this be done solely from the inside?

And are you sure that it is a 100nm torque setting? I can't find the correct setting for this in the workshop manual Mad a defender from 1984 pretending to be a puma with a touch of Range Rover

Defintely 100nm for the front and rear diff flange bolt for both 110 and Puma.

My guess is you just need a new seal, at least for now. If the flange is worn it'll buy you a bit of time to sort funds out if you did need to replace it.
As the seal is cheap as chips, the Genuine flanges are about £260 +

Mine has leaked multiple times now, if I was you I would check your prop UJ's too as I have found lately that failing or failed Prop UJ's will cause the diff oil leak as well.

You may as well, as you'll proactively have the prop off anyway and you can't always easily tell if they are kaput whilst in situ.
The UJ on mine failed, on the prop yokes nearest the rear diff nose, and cause the pinion seal to leak too. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

But a little voice in my head Embarassed is wondering if we are talking about the same thing. And that is because english is not my native thing of course Laughing

When I look for the flange part nr TXW500010 comes up. And a original LR one is about 90 pound not 260. a defender from 1984 pretending to be a puma with a touch of Range Rover

Be careful with the flanges. I have had two aftermarket (but not Britpart which I would expect to be defective) flanges which have been machined out-of-round and with which there was not a snowball's chance in hell of a good seal. I now check the diameter in several places with a micrometer before fitting a new flange.

I have not had this problem with genuine flanges, only aftermarket.

But steve said that they will cost 260 + but when I look they are about 90-95. So I was wondering are we talking about the same part. a defender from 1984 pretending to be a puma with a touch of Range Rover

I was wondering are we talking about the same part (yes we are ) i had look flange kit LRJ up to 06 as Steve saying pox cost £260 post 07 too 09 pox cost £78 kit has new part number and mud shield can be used on ever flange the only thing left is the flange and bolt, washer Rolling Eyes

Set a price based on cost. Then take two dice. One dice with three * and three with / and a regular dice.

Price * or / number of eyes = new price and of course part number


Guess I got lucky this time. a / and a 3 Very Happy a defender from 1984 pretending to be a puma with a touch of Range Rover
