I would guess that an alternator fault could be the reason your ignition light is not going off. Might also account for the fan belt squeal.

Very likely one of the diodes in the alternator has failed. Cheers, Vincent

You should be able to just change the rectifier pack, rather than the whole alternator.

Check the belt is tight first. The switch off problem could be the fuel solenoid in the top on the injector Pump.
