300tdi - turn key and eventually starting
This mourning when I went to the Land Rover I started it as usual but when the glow plugs finished I turned the key to position 3 and nothing again, like a problem I had a few months ago. I decided to hold the key and after about fifteen seconds it cranked and started like normal. Any ideas as to why this is? Stuck solenoid on the starter? Started perfectly fine up until this point and started again fine this afternoon from cold. 1999 Land Rover Defender 110 td5 station wagon

Does yours have the factory fitted alarm with the two button key fob? If so, it could be failure of what is known as the 'spider unit'. This is part of the immobiliser system. They're well known for developing dry joints on the circuit board to the extent that Land Rover eventually produced a little by-pass loom that plugs in in place of the unit itself.

I had exactly the same on a 300tdi Discovery some years ago where it would, intermittently, crank but not start. Darren

Thanks for the suggestion, it does indeed have that type of alarm and I still haven't removed it for some reason. Will look into that Thumbs Up 1999 Land Rover Defender 110 td5 station wagon

I had similar problems on my 1998 300Tdi.
I removed every alarm related part and put a "bypass" (you can find it on Ebay) in the black box under left seat.
No more problems!!!
You can try first with bypass. Si Vis Pacem Para Bellum

Thanks, will check it out, hasn't been to much of a problem lately but a permanent fix is always better than a temporary one Thumbs Up 1999 Land Rover Defender 110 td5 station wagon

The most common issue with the “spider” was dry joints on the solder,
I had similar issues with my 300 tdi disco. 80" 80" 86" 88" 90"

Well its been about a week since I fitted the bypass and everything seems normal again. No delayed starts or complete failure-to-starts. There was a parking space in the local tesco that was notorious as five times I parked in the exact place it wouldn't start at all, but elsewhere in the car park it was fine Laughing . Parked there a few times now and haven't had any issues so hopefully that is problem solved Thumbs Up

Yep, that’s it. Inside there there’s a multiplug thing, and the bypass plug just slots in. Donald
