Insulation tape recommendations
I intend to install a cruise control soon and I'm looking for recommendations regarding insulating the spliced joints. I think I'm right in thinking that in order to splice into an existing cable and insulate using heat shrink tubing I have to cut the cable completely and slide on the heat shrink before soldering the 3 wires?

The other option is to bare the insulation on the existing cable then wrap the joining cable, solder and insulate with tape?

I think I prefer option 2 so can anyone suggest a quality brand or supplier of insulation tape? Too often in the past Ive used generic insulation tapes which, after a short time have gone all sticky or hard. I have used self amalgamating tape for some jobs but this tends to be awkward to apply in a confined space and makes a rather large joint.

I take it that there is no such thing as a heat shrink tape to wrap joints?

Personally for me,

It’s got to be soldered, and heat shrink.
I also use heatshrink terminals too, which are nice to use. Thumbs Up 80" 80" 86" 88" 90"

Wanted, Forward Control Anything considered.

H You could use "self amalgamating tape" it bonds to its self to make a waterproof seal. some sparks on hear will tell you better. I remember the sparks offshore using it but get a good quality one like 3M maybe.

Self amalgamating tape works, but personally I cut and splice.

For small joints I use the self soldering heat shrink joints, for larger joints I use heat shrinkable crimps.

You can get self sealing heat shrink which makes waterproof joints. I can't remember what it's called now but my mate had some and it's brilliant stuff Thumbs Up 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

As far as i can judge it, it's works the same as heat shrink sleeves but then with glue (should also be watertight). a defender from 1984 pretending to be a puma with a touch of Range Rover

Adhesive-lined heatshrink will be weatherproof if properly formed.

Why i like this product that you don’t need heat. And sometimes when fixing wires the absence of a flame can be benificial Ahum Whistle a defender from 1984 pretending to be a puma with a touch of Range Rover
