2.4... better not to have a DPF... Sticking with my 2.4... Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)

Depends where you live. If you live near any major city thinking of banning anything not Euro V from entering then you should look at a 2.2 as the 2.4s are Euro IV

Reading this thread from the beginning, we always defend what we have clearly.
![]() ![]() Go for a well taken care of 2.4 (2.401 cc), forget about the 2.2 (2.198 cc). The 2.4 has a bit more agricultural engine sound which imo suits the Defender better. It definitely has much more engine braking power with its 17.5 to 1 compression than the 2.2 with its 15.5 to 1 (big difference, I have tried both in identical conditions). No DPF for the 2.4 means no issues with diesel contaminating the engine oil. And of course as has been said by some, there is also no replacement for displacement. In fact a difference of not just 200, but 203 cc. ![]() Eric You never actually own a Defender. The DPF is there for a reason, and that is to improve the emissions and take dangerous toxins out of the air that we breathe.
I find that I cannot agree with the sentiment that they are just another nuisance. ![]() 1967 Morris Traveller 1966 Morris Convertible 2012 VW T5 Camper Quod Abundat Non Obstat. |

Thanks for all your helpful comments. I am pleased to see that there are no other physical differences (besides CC and the DPF). I will now look for my preferred style (110 USW) in acceptable condition and hopefully the lower rate of road tax. Cheers

Won't go wrong with a 110 USW, though I am biased

In fact you need more Diesel on a 2.2 to maintain the DPF. In addition, it does not hold back the dangerous particles <100µm! I am sorry to say that the whole discussion is not grounded on scientific evidence. It's window dressing. But it's off-topic ... ![]() |

When I bought mine,
I narrowed it down to A lower mileage 2.4 in black or a higher mileage 2.2 in Silver Black won on looks ![]() OK so its £500 or so a year to tax, the merc was around £225 but the car as a whole was losing way more than the landy... so it all offsets ![]() LOVE IT ![]() Click image to enlarge |

Having owned both (first a 2.2, now the 2.4), I'd say if you want quiet and manners, then the 2.2. But I personally prefer the 2.4, even if a smidge nosier, as it seems to have more obvious grunt/pull/urgency. 2.2 in comparison felt lethargic. Maybe that doesn't matter if you're all about long M-Way miles where I think the quiet of the 2.2 might be better. Didn't have either mapped, but I have heard 2.4 is better when done. Happy with my 2.4l, will be more so when it becomes a V8.

Neither is really true. "Commercial Vehicles" are all in the lower tax bracket, so any Puma Van, Pick-up or USW will have the lower road tax of about £260 per year. However from the end of 2010 onwards Land Rover put all the Defenders, even the station wagons with windows and seats all around in the Commercial vehicles class, so they got the lower tax. |
