Really there isn't much practical difference between the two other than the DPF. Performance is virtually identical.

The 2.2 isn't just a 2.4 with 200 less CC's it does have a lot of technical changes on the engine as well as the DPF, but few of them make any noticeable difference in practice.

I went for a 2.4 just because it's better not to have a DPF for the short trips I do.

One benefit of the 2.2 is the electric lift pump, so it's easier to bleed the fuel system when you do a filter change.

I remember reading a review of the 2.2 when it was first released and it stated the engine compartment was completely redesigned and the car had additional sound proofing over the 2.4

The additional sound proofing consists of a larger plastic cover lined with foam on top of the engine.
