Welcome aboard,
Going on what you say, I would put money on it’s the input shaft that’s worn? Sadly an all too common problem! I have had one of our work 110s recovered today, earlier in the week someone said the box was clunking on changing down Through the gears, sure enough the backlash was quite bad! Today, the input shaft failed and lost all drive while reversing up a driveway. I’ve replaced a few as a precaution, including my own 2008 90 which I inserted a grease nipple into the splined cup, And seems to work well. It will be interesting to see how bad this one is, it’s been a heavy towing vehicle since new, And has only managed 80,000 miles before complete failure. It would pay to check the drive flanges while your there too, Good luck with getting it sorted, It’s a shame JLR won’t step up and address this well known and dangerous issue. 80" 80" 86" 88" 90" Wanted, Forward Control Anything considered. |

The drivetrain backlash will likely be the adaptor shaft (gearbox output to transfer box), as well as play in the propshaft UJ's, as well as play in the Propshaft splines, as well as play in the Diff's as well as play at the end of the half shafts. It all adds up!
Adaptor shaft is usually the worst though and the biggest job to replace, mines been a lot better since fitting the Ashcroft kit. Later type one piece half shafts will also lose some more of the slop. |

Hi and welcome!
Take it for a drive to get it warm and then stop in neutral. If you hear a 'clunk, clunk, clunk' but it disappears when you dip the clutch then it's most definitely the clutch more specifically the springs rattling. Again, well documented on here although don't be rushed into doing anything - mine has done this intermittently for a considerable amount of time with no negative effect. Obviously if you are loading up your vehicle or towing heavy loads you may not wish to leave it to chance. It won't be the flywheel on a Puma Defender, unlike the TD5 or Transit they're solid flywheels.

Apologies, post edited to avoid confusion!
Not sure why I mentioned the flywheel when I meant the springs! Now: 2010 2.4 TDCi 110 Utility Wagon Then: 2004 2.5 TD5 90 Hard Top (X-Tech Edition) |
