The engine
So I started to poke around the engine, as it was advertised as a 4.2 “possibly reconditioned”. I started to think that just maybe this was a good un. The unit was on a proper engine crate still attached with the proper metal retaining bands etc. It also came with some soggy bits and bobs like a fuel pressure meter. I was hoping it hadn’t been out in the rain too long. If anybody knows what engine this is, then im all ears. Seems a bit of a mongrel of the parts bin from what ive been told. Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Bought one of these off eBay to have a looks down the bores. You cant really tell from the photos, but it looked untouched down there. Just lovely cross hatching. Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Bad news! I couldn’t get the engine to turn over using a large bar, even with the spark plugs out. Did a whole lot of worrying for a few days. I eventually took the serpentine belt off and it turned out that the alternator was jammed, probably due to being left out in the rain Id guess. Anyhow after huge amounts of WD40 and tool number 1, it freed off and it turned over like a good un ! After a bunch of googling and eventually finding out it was an RPI unit, I called them with the engine number and they told me it was one of theirs, and it was 4.6! They even offered to buy it back. These guys however turned out to be more useless than a chocolate teapot where it comes to after care. Just difficult to deal with.§ http://www.390b6d.11.ekm.shop/ultimate-lan...-441-p.asp This is the one! and seems its a little breathed upon |

I've also found RPI difficult to deal with. Talking at you rather than with you. Looking like a good engine though 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

If you have the 4.6 engine with the details you've put up, then your 90 will go very well indeed, besides which, with that engine & chassis, ya've got the bargain of the century,....how long before you actually start the engine?
This is a ripper thread,Pickles. |

Where do you start? I remind you that I haven’t the slightest clue when it comes to mechanicing and up to this point the garage had done all the mods for me, apart from the soft top conversion which I tackled with a mate of mine. Just nuts and bolts etc. This was on a whole new level of difficulty lol.
First job, clear out the garage. Get it on axle stands. Its safe to say that during this build I did a ton of learning, huge huge amounts of googling and looking at the PDF parts guides etc. Cant tell you how much time this all took. I also steadily built up a bunch of tools, which in my mind would last me forever so not part of the build cost lol. Talking of costs, I didnt start with a budget in mind. I knew I wanted to keep it pretty low, but it kinda escalated tbh. This was mostly offset by the fact that were now into year 3 and it still isn’t done, so the costs are well spread out. This defender is never going to be sold, its a keeper. Too much of me in it, to do anything otherwise tbh. Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge |
