I mounted my DRL controller on the left hand wing.

I routed the 12v trigger wire to the blower immediately adjacent.

there is a Orange / red wire from memory that is a ignition live wire.

I just tapped into that.

The DRL is pulling milliamps, and the blower wiring has plenty of headroom for the additional pull from the DRL controller.

All above is fused at source, so really very little risk.

Food for thought.

Cheers

Thanks for everyones help. All suggestions taken on board and found these ideas most useful.

A further possibility, if your Defender had dim-dip and you have disabled it (like all sensible folk do - dim-dip was a ridiculous and stupid idea!) by bypassing the relay, i.e., linking pin 2 to pin 8 on the relay socket, is to take a feed from the now-unused pin 1 position on the relay socket. This is an ignition-activated feed from CJB Fuse 15 (5A). If however your Defender was not built with dim-dip, you may not have this socket wired (I have never looked at a non-DD vehicle to see).

I measured the 12V to the dipped headlamp when switched to main beam and it dropped to 8V which indicates to me that it has a dim-dip relay fitted? Looking at the wiring diagram I have, it shows it as relay dim-dip R126. On my 2010 defender where is it located??

If you have one, it's the tall one top right in the CJB (ie the fuse box under the dash).

If I remember correctly that's the one. Pull it out and see if you have dip beam, if it's the dim dip relay you won't with the relay removed.

I'll take it out and try tomorrow. If it is i'll defeat its function. Many thanks for your help. If it ain't broke don't fix it!

After all of that when I removed the relay is only had two pins (odd I'm thinking) when I took the back off it was just a shorting line between the top and bottom pins. So it looks like it dim-dip was disabled all the time after all! If it ain't broke don't fix it!

I have fitted a hella DRL that has a "smart" controller

I simply wired it to the alternator per instructions (yes permanent live
The smart controller is essentially a voltage sensitive relay that turn the lights on if a charging voltage is detected.
Works great

So wire the DRL positive to alternator as permanent love
And earth to earth on a/c compressor housing
Then the Parker wired to the positive low beam wire so the DRL became Parkers at night
