NAS rear step - fixing bolts
Hi all

I eventually managed to remove the remove nas step after working out I had to remove the rear qtr small piece of chequer plate which meant I could just (!) about get a spanner inside the rear cross member to hold the nut whilst I loosed the bolt.

The question is, how on earth do I get that nut back in there? I can imagine it must be near impossible.

The alternative is to buy longer bolts but I can imagine that could crush the near cross member and I can't see I could even get any distanced pieces inside them as described on Point 6 here... http://www.extreme4x4.co.uk/acatalog/LRM_i...racket.pdf

Suggestion welcome!

Cheers

Two things that Spring to mind. Can you A: weld a piece of rod on to the nut to help position it inside the cross member? Or B: fit a captive nut from the outside of the crossmember so negating the need for a spanner?

Hello stuart123

Photo's... Question

Do you mean the 2 fixing Bolts on the end of the NAS Step... Question
Mine go all the way through the Cross Member...
May be look to see if you can do the same...
Alternatively...a magnetic, ratchet ring spanner would probably hold the Nut sufficiently
in place to pick up the thread... Question

Geobloke - even with a welded rod onto the nut I think I may struggle - good idea though. Just don't know how they got it on in the first place! Where would a captive nut go?! Not sure I follow that i'm afraid.

X4SKP - Sorry, no photos but yes, it is the fixing bolts on the end that you refer to and show in your photo... Interesting to see they go all the way through on yours. Looks like the bracket on the inside has been added to maybe spread the load across the rear member as I don't have that on mine...?!

Check you have the bit inside the end of the crossmember, looks like two tubes welded to a stick:

Do you have rear seats? Your profile shows a Puma CSW so you should, and therefore should have the bracket shown in X4SKP's photo as that's for the rear seat mount Shocked  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

I think those bolts only go right through (and therefore have spacers) if you have forward-facing rear seats with the seat belt reinforcing bracket fitted.

You could try holding the nut in the ring of a spanner with tape, you could fit spacers and through bolts, you could fit Rivnuts from the ouside.

The NAS step is supposed to be fitted with bolts all the way through with spacers-on-a-stick:

Thanks for all the replies - no rear seats so would explain why I don't have that bracket....

I don't think I have anything inside the rear cross member... I think if I did, the nut wouldn't have come out of there in the first place... looks like I need to order Part number KVX000020

Thanks for the instructions... my step is slightly different so assume not a Land Rover one.

Will work out how to upload a photo of it!

The KVX tubes are dear (£25 each!) so perhaps work out an alternative?

That looks like the Masai version, slightly larger plates where the rod of the old style long jack fits and the tread is aluminium chequer plate.

I think i have some of the anti crush tubes (kvx000020) left over from fitting a style auto (OEM) step bumper, as they were already present. I'll have a look in the garage tomorrow if you like? Current Steeds:

If not I will come up with an alternative options.

Cheers
