A snorkel does cause a restriction but I doubt you would notice it. If you re do the pipework with larger diameter and have a remap then you won't notice any detrimental effect I'd have said 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

If you remove the rain separator in the original ducting that will pretty much equalise nearly all restriction.
(But there will still be a very small amount - so little. Not enough to be of concern.) If you replace Ducting as well it'll be around the same. This is based on a standard tune but there is little difference to it if remapped. I run my Safari with rain separator removed, but standard ducting. Very little difference with or without, definitely nothing to notice. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R 🇬🇧🏴🏴🏴🇮🇪🇺🇸⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰💪 |

I found less lag at speed after fitting my safari to the TD5. I run with the 'dump valve' fitted but think i removed the vortex on the air box inlet.
The safari section which passes through the wing is so much less restrictive than the stupid standard elbow. I ensured that i used the 300tdi version of the snorkel so i could get rid of that elbow as the newer td5/tdci model retains it. Steve 02' 110 TD5 Double Cab Rebuild Thread |

I'm running a southdown snorkel with a BAS 170 and you don't notice any difference.

I replaced my Mantec snorkel with a Nakatanenga top-entry snorkel and there is a very substantial improvement! The engine breathes much more freely, is more responsive, and revs higher than it did before.
Until you fit a properly-engineered large-bore sealed induction system, and the Nakatanenga snorkel is the only one I know of, you don't really appreciate how chronically restrictive the original Landrover "microbore" induction system is. It is unlikely that the op's snorkel/RAI will make much difference since as long as the original pipe from wing to airbox is used, this is the most severely restrictive piece. |

That's why I build my own. Maybe not to everybodies liking but no restrictions.

Yes I like it ! Might have a go at fabricating my own as well, the mantec one is fine for a raised air intake but getting the thing to seal is very hard. I have some 4 inch exhaust pipe and a mig welder, what could go wrong ?

Could you post a few more detailed pics for me ? Inside the engine bay would be good as well.

How about this for a custom airbox?

I am considering fitting twin snorkels (Southdown) to my TD5 for maximum air flow, looks pretty simple to do on the TD5 airbox anyway.

Pretty cool steampunk looking mod! Some detail pics:
Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge I removed all the standard water catchers, But made my own in the wing. The pipe goes vertical through the top off the wing till just above the innerwing. The bottom has a small angle and on the lowest side I have a small pipe. The metal pipe were the red hose goes slips over sits about 2 cm above the btm. A garden hose is fitted to the small pipe and goes over the inner wing to the footwell area where I can tap the water off. I don't have picture off the water catcher but it really works well. looks good ! I might copy your idea of the water drain fitting as well. I think I will keep mine running in through the wing plate however. What internal diameter is the snorkel and the flexihose? Thanks

The ID is all 80mm. Except for 10 cm below the wing were the red hose is pushed over a pipe. That is 75mm id. Roel
