I don't shoot much any more (I always used to miss most of it anyway) but I do go beating every week.

My 32 year old bronze Green Ninety soft-top fits in well with the country ambience (unlike the shiny silver and black RR's of the Guns!)

Hi guys, brand new to the forum and having a koch about and came across this thread !

Hello !

I love to shoot clays and go most weekends. Got a Browning 525 Sporting o/u and a Winchester pump. Not saying I'm any good but I enjoy it. Places I shoot are usually muddy so everything gets launched in the back of the Defender and off I go, usually someone says 'I should get one of those' !

Anyway, glad to be here.

Stuart.

Slideywindows, where do you go beating in Essex? I grew up there but have never shot there. The nearest shoots to my folks are Holfield Grange and the Marks Hall Estate. It all looks pretty flat though I imagine its good partridge ground.

Huttopia, between Braintree and Saffron Walden

The northwest of Essex is not as flat as people imagine, with some nice river valleys and what we like to call "hills"!

Even on flatter ground we can get birds to fly high, if the weather isn't too wet and foggy.

It is, of course, mandatory that anything "low" is left to fly by, no matter how wet, cold and frustrated the Guns may be!

Hi, I know Coggeshall well.

Can't tell you about the breed of pheasants unfortunately, as I am just a humble beater!

But it is a nice day out for my SI, II, Ninety or Defender!

Just answered the door to a very alarmed courier who was delivering my other half's passport.

Realised I was holding my knife, with bloodied hands......................anyone else been breasting-out their pheasants today? Laughing Whistle

Just got back from a few days stalking in a small patch (~10,000 acres) of land. Ten points to the person who can spot my father and two labs (they are white).

Dragged the carcasses off the hill to the FF so we limited ourselves to 2 since after the stalk, gralloching and dragging it off the hill a fair bit of the day is gone. Still I doubt there are many '322s used in the same manner - I think the local car wash is going to be a bit surprised when they find blood on the tailgate...

My pups got big whilst I was away!

Do you eat venison and are you allowed to take some home?

Do I eat venison?!

Of course, arrived back home at midnight last night after a 12h drive, got up this morning and had to feed pups. Once I'd had a quick fry up and plucked up the energy I started butchering it. Still going several hours later, but the end is in sight.

~2000 acres (the most inaccessible) is ours the remainder is an agreement with our neighbour. So naturally we get to keep the meat. No costs apart from the odd bottle of whisky exchanging hands and the £300 worth of fuel to get there and back!

Nice position to be in I must admit. Ed

Beautiful country.

Not much cover on that hill - was it a long stalk?

Never bothered to apply for a FAC on the basis that I don't have the land or the need - certainly not for a centrefire.

Our shoot limits the numbers of permissions (and I'm new to the syndicate this season) so it must be a privilege to have that acreage. Always fancied doing the DSC - maybe something for later in life Wink

Well done.

You'd be surprised how much cover there is, there's a 50ft gully halfway along there. The hinds we got were further down where the stalks were shorter.

In terms of acreage yes we're lucky but that far up north it's not that big... Ed

Last day of the season for me (and Willow the dog) today. We ended up on a duck drive, and the world's unluckiest duck fell to my last shot! Later Willow got a round of applause from the guns for a jolly determined water retrieve - the duck kept diving but she stuck at it. A nice way to finish.

I now need to look at the 90, give it a shovel out and start working through a to-do list of fixes........

Last day for us yesterday. Novelty for me shooting on a Wednesday I have to say! Finished with a mixed bag of 75. Scout's had a cracking first season (tired but very happy boy)!
