I'm sure in the hands of a very good shot there is no reason why a .410 and a 16g cartridge can't do the job at 35yds. I'd have thought for most shots there would be more chance of pricking a bird with that set up than e.g. a 12 bore with a 28g 6?

Without descending this further that's all I was implying, fundamentally to "kill" something be it a clay or bird only one pellet of substantial enough size needs to be on target. You're simply increasing your chances with the larger cartridges.

The 35/40 yards commonly given is a sensible distance to think of as the effective range because it ensures clean kills, that's by no means the upper limits if you have enough experience and know the gun well. I know my old Lanber with 3/4 choke and Eley 32g 5s patterned extremely well out to 60 yards and I'd regularly take out squirrels at 50 yards. The 1/2 or another shell didn't as well, that combination just worked well. I'd usually try and get closer but it just goes to show what is capable, even before you get into the Digweed realm.

The .410 that I bought off a friend for Dad I'd seen regularly drop pheasants at 45 yards, he got on well with it but I can't hit a barn door with it. Dad gets on fine with it. Ed

Sako - couple of assumptions on my behalf re. Your .410.
I assume you are taller than your father & your friend.....
& that the gun doesn't fit you properly.
Try lengthening the stock by 1.5" & then shoot it.
Even if there is not a height difference still try adding 1.5" - use a leather stock extension & pack it out to get the length.Tape it on using insulation tape ( won't mark the stock)
Let me know if it works

Had a great day at a friend's shoot - such a good turnout of Land Rovers we had to have a group pic: -

Great to see all the Landy's out shooting, great turn out on the defender front!

Only me an another td5 on the shoot I went to in Monmouth, mainly Izuzu D-Max's, seem like a good truck actually. Cooked up the other pheasants and kept back one for some dog training. Bit worried he was going to be too small but seemed to get on alright with this hen bird, hopefully he'll start filling out over course of next year ready for next season. Built a retrieving lane to drill in coming back in a straight line, seems like a good plan.

Not every shoot day is so Rover-heavy - there are Nissans, VWs and all sorts but just so happened that we had virtually all Defender / Series trucks by coincidence. Both shoots I attend are majority LR, which is always a source of comment / Censored -taking / commiseration, depending on experience Smile

I've also heard the D-MAX is a good truck and they've been recommended to me several times, along with the HiLux. I guess in many ways they are the functional replacement for the Defender, if not the emotional one ...

Nice looking cocker you have there - determined look in his eyes too! I think they can manage much more than people expect of them, even when they're on the slight side. I hope in the next 2 years to add a WCS to the household too, and assist on the shoot days. Can't wait !

Ok, I know nothing. In a sequence of events that were highly improbable both of the boys shot their first pheasants with a single barrel .410. Both head shots and decent birds. I couldn't believe it, I still can't believe it. The smiling faces tell the story - they were very careful to pick up the exact birds they shot....

I have a suspicion that 300 metres may be a typo. My FAC level rifle (3 times the power of a normal air rifle and 6 times that of a pistol) would possibly be able to manage that. 125 yards was the longest kill (a crow) I've pulled off with that and that took some doing. Admittedly it is a .22, you'd get better accuracy from a .177.

If he's shooting at 300m with an air pistol then I'd expect him to know what pistols could achieve that...

Don't know much about pistols but I've always had Air-Arms rifles and they do a competition pistol by the looks of it, would require a pump or cylinder though, rather than cock it each time. Ed
