Kleenex at the ready...

It's time.

Those once bright conker coloured eyes that shone so brightly are now dim embers, the firm muscular frame has shrunk and withered, his handsome glossy black face now hollowed and grey.

I hold that noble head in my hands and run my thumbs along and down the curves of his cheeks, my forehead on his and my nose resting between his eyes listening to his breathing for the last time

Moving my head away I look at him and feel the silky soft of his ears as I twiddle them between my fingers .

His breathing slows and shallows and his head begins to fall into my waiting palms.

The embers finally die and he is gone.

For so many times have I dreaded this moment but like sunrises and sunsets, inevitably they come. I'm glad I am with him at the end , to hold and to ensure the dignity in his final moments that he so deserves.

So farewell my mate , my lad , my constant shadow, my rescued boy , my "try my hardest " fella.
My tolerant little man that never once bared his teeth or hackled up even with the most annoying dogs or people

Whose fur absorbed tears , who listened , with cocked head and pricked ears when I ranted, shouted and talked nonsense, allowing me to finish before running off to retrieve a sock, hat, shoe or slipper as if to say , " that's all very interesting but you know what dad this smelly sock is the centre of the universe right now and you WILL play and you will play now”

Whose otter tail whirl constantly , like a rotor blade bruising anybody's shins it came into contact.
Whose enthusiasm dragged me out in the foulest of weather after the crappiest of night shifts, who in my darkest hours competed with the 'other' black dog and never once allowed the imposter to take control.

So my special friend , thank you for being a dog without equal, for teaching me about so many things and making so many memories that even now allow me to smile through the pain .

Tomorrow there will be a empty space in the dog bed and empty hook on which your collar hung, an empty space in my heart, a heart that wants to break but can't because of the golden threads of love and loyalty you wove around it in the oh too short years you were together.

Run free across the bridge. You'll be in good company 2008 RS4 gone, 123d M Sport, and a Puma 90 XS..

Some lovely words there, thank you. Yesterday was a tough one, before the vet came my wife and I took both the dogs through the fields and the old one flushed her last pheasants, 3 hens that took off down the valley. Over the weekend she'd stopped eating and the kidney problems were making her toxic. The vet put her to sleep in her bed, it was all very peaceful and Mrs H stroked her head throughout. Last pic having a paddle at Witley Court.

I'm not sure how the remaining lab will react, she has never been on her own for any length of time. We will see......

One cannot replace that loss. The loss of unconditional love and companionship you receive from your dog.
Still, if the dog lived its life with you I feel it would have been a happy one and that, at the end of the day, is all we can give in return to them.
A working dog is fulfilling it's genetic destiny and I've never seen a happier dog of mine than when shooting with me.
Hold onto that.

I haven't been shooting in years! Once ammo started going up around 2006 I stopped shooting and started saving my ammo. I've got a couple new pistols I need to go try out and at least function check as well as an unfired rifle that's never ventured to the range.

100 bird day.
Defender used as a bar at 'elevensies'.
Only downside was that my dog couldn't be with me (had been being sick a lot and losing weight) - should be out again with me on Boxing Day 🐶

Thinking of buying a new gun, anyone been to the Shooting Show in Warwickshire before? Is it worth going to grab a bargain?

The shooting show is worth a visit but does get very busy and hard to get to some of the exhibitors sometimes, my advice would be to get there early.
Regarding bargains I would say shop around while you are there, I have never had any real bargains but it is worthwhile trying to haggle, towards the end of the show you may be able to do some deals.

I don't think there are any real bargains to be had. Much depends on the type of gun you are looking for....
Not supporting your local RFD in the long term is a big mistake.
You then lose specialist advice, local stock of ammo & all the other services that an RFD provides.
Besides the margins on new guns are generally very poor & therefore the bargains don't exist.

No, it was really the chance to pull the trigger. A 16g cartridge isn't going to do a great deal at 35+ yds but we were up in the wood at the start of the line, so anything touched would get cleaned up. Hopefully it is a message that practice on a clay ground with a gun that fits properly is a good idea!

Good fun non the less for him I'm sure!

I took my .410 out with 19g 6's and had good fun on the first time we tried to shoot, the little shoot I set up. But they were close range in comparison to a normal driven day. I've seen some .410 only driven days advertised before, would love to spectate on one of those days.

.410s, 16g and so on have the same lethal range as a 12 bore, you just have to be a damn sight more accurate, what typically gets affected is spread rather than range.

I've seen some pretty phenomenal shots pulled off with 410s, dropped the birds just as hard as a 12.

With regards to the comment above on margins on new guns that's pretty much the opposite of what I am aware off having been privy to RFD prices. Margins are slim on second hand guns and ammo but manufacturers set good markups on new guns and often dictate the MRSP, if you as an RFD violate then you're likely to lose the dealership. Net result is the same for the end customer though, they can't haggle much. Ed

As an RFD & a Shooting School/ Ground owner I need to disagree on a few points.
Margins on new guns such as Brownings & such like tend to be around 10-12%.
Second hand & ammo can be better. Esoteric types of guns leave more margin but then the stock holding tends to type up large amounts of cash for a very limited market.
You could very quickly tie up hundreds of thousands in stock & in this game there is little on credit from the big suppliers.

Now range of shotguns/ lethal power.
Size 6 shot has been shown to carry for around 260 yards from a 12b.For safety reasons we allow a fallout area of 300 yards.
It doesn't make a huge amount of difference if it comes out of a 12 , a 20 or whatever.
To alter one's perception of what is a safe distance depending on the bore of gun being used is very foolish.

A shotgun kills as a result ( at distance) by the number of pellets within a given pattern AND the amount of energy contained in those pellets.
A .410 3" cartridge using full choke has a technical effective pattern of 30" at 36 yards. i.e sufficient pellets within the pattern to kill a pigeon at that distance.
Therefore as you work up the bore size so the efffective range will increase ( because there are more pellets within the cartridge/ pattern)
So a 16b at 35 yards ( which is a high bird for most game shoots/shooters) is more than effective.

Incidentally gun fit on a .410 is very important to ensure it works correctly- you need a stock length longer than your 12b
